Surfing Waves

Hi guys,

I've got 3 weeks off work coming up at the end of July and would like to head somewhere for some surfing and nice weather. I've been looking at Cali, starting in San Fran and heading down the coast to San Diego. Does anyone have experience surfing out that way? Or maybe you can suggest somewhere else? I'll be travelling from the UK.

It's a lot of driving, the coast around "Big Sir" is just stunning. If you do decide to hit the west coast, I can point you to some nice Orange County breaks and good Mexican food, once you get to that leg of your journey. (just So. of LA County) I live like 10 minuets from Trestles (actually SD County)

Thanks scsurf, that'd be great. If i do book Cali, the plan was to stay in Huntington Beach for 5 nights and rent a board. do think this is a good base to get to other beaches/surf in the area? Oh, and will i need a wetsuit that time of year?

Yeah, Huntington's fine There is a lot to see, it's big and spread out. There's a lot of hustle and bustle around that time of the year. I'm bias to South Orange county, it's more layback but I'm in my mid 50's as well LOL. and we're more sheltered from the midday winds.

The water temp is typically nice then but you never know, last year was like bath water for us 75 F. Sometimes it can be cold too, hoping this El Nino will keep it warm.

Make sure you map your accommodations, you can be in the City of Huntington Beach and be nowhere near the beach.

Well if you're doing a California surf trip, then you might want to do the greatest hits.

Fort Point, SF (If it's actually breaking, then why not surf under the GG Bridge. If you're not fit and strong, then don't even go out there. Vicious current.)
Ocean Beach, SF (strong current as well)
Steamer's Lane, Santa Cruz
Pleasure Point, Santa Cruz
Or skip Santa Cruz and check out Ano Nuevo (beautiful beach and wedgy wave)

Malibu

What safety ideas should we keep in mind while surfing? Please suggest me some important tips.

A whole to learn tips are not enough! Swimming well and knowing and understanding the beach you surf at?
Understanding rips, Sharks, size of wave and keeping your head above water are all important.

A basic question we would ask you, where are you planning to surf?
This will be interesting as it seems English is not your native language!

Check out the Algarve, it's so much closer than Cali!

Hey I live on gold cost but I'm looking for holiday destination close to Australia- good waves, no crowd, good weather, beautiful views any recommendations?

Which particular Gold Coast? Quite a few countries have an area named that!
Good waves good weather , no crowds, near Australia. How much money do you have? Are you willing to travel much?
Time travel maybe, Aussies have been going to many spots you might go since Morning of the Earth came out as well as the rest of the world since Endless Summer.

What about Spain's Costa Blanca? I know that the Mediteranean sea, due to its geography, can't have waves as high as the ones on the Atlantic, but they'd be more appropriate for a casual/beginner surfer and his family.
The thing is that my wife and I were considering buying one of tranio.com/spain/valencia/alicante/detached/ houses in Alicante for the holidays, and if there are nice surf spots there, I'd be quite happy... Otherwise, I guess I can't avoid a trip to the Basque coast or to Portugal once there and then, but it wouldn't be optimal.

There is surf and although it is not as regular as the Atlantic, you can get quality and sometimes size.
I would recommend a as this will help your learning and give you access to many more smaller days.

Okay, thanks a lot! I did know that there were surf trainers in this region, but wanted to hear from the pros whether it was worth it or if it was a good way to waste money.

Ok, a caveat on my advice, surf anywhere can be fickle, there are only a few spots on on any coast that have all year round surf, mainly just a season when it is more regular.
Buying a house needs to cover more benefits to you and your family than just your wish to surf.

Go spend a longish holiday there, get to know the locals who will teach you, schools, shopping stuff you would to do beyond surf.
Waste or not of money, your serious call on that!
