April: Nayarit or Oahu

Postby Kulharin » Wed Feb 03, 2016 5:49 pm

Hello,

I am planning a surf trip from April 8 to April 20th (give or take a few days) and am debating between Oahu (whole island) or Nayarit (between San Blas and Punta Mita) I'd be renting a vehicle at both destinations but am mainly looking to camp or stay at budget accommodation for much of the trip. One average how is the surf/crowds/camping/food/weather/budget accommodation? I'm from Canada so the trade off is a cheaper car rental in Oahu but the tanking Canadian dollar will make everything else more expensive; flight price is pretty much the same... Vehicle rental in Mexico is more expensive but the Canadian dollar goes a lot further in Mexico than the US.

I'm actually headed to Tepic to surf Sayulita, Punta Mita and San Pancho. They are great spots but they are hit it miss as to size. Hawaii is more consistent but way more crowded.

Whole island ? There's no waves on the Northshore in April. Eastside get tradewind swells. South is more sure starting May. West side ..... don't go there if someone doesn't take you.

Cheaper car rental on Oahu ? Have you checked the rates with Hertz and Budget ? My friend use to work at Enterprise, said customers waited for hours, until a car would be returned. Rental car taxes, fees and insurance add up.

Question: you plan to shortboard or longboard ?

Looking at the historic swell over the years; it show the north shore to be comparable to October and November; so I don't see how the north shore would have no waves that time of year? I'm not looking for huge waves; I'm surf mostly in cold water so I'm not too picky on wave size/quality, though I'd plan to tour and surf mostly the south, north and west shore in Oahu...

I surf a 7'8" fun shape and a 6'6"

I've never been to either place but I have surf Kauai, Maui and Baja Sur

The only big kicker is Oahu has a bunch of state and national campgrounds on all four shows... there doesn't appear to be much in the way of campgrounds for Nayarit.

   No need for campgrounds here in Nayarit. Check out the price of the surf packages for 2 boat trips a day almost all inclusive that these guys are doing:
