The interesting aspect of the disease is how it could spread like crazy around the world after the Summer Olympics in Brazil, not to mention the surf travel industrial complex. I also find it amazing that in El Salvador the government has advised all women to forgo pregnancy for two years. Yow. Birth defect nightmare.

https://www.washingtonpost.com/world/th ... story.html

"Although mosquitoes are responsible for the great majority of transmissions, Haddow helped to discover that the virus can also be sexually communicated. In 2009, during a field study in Senegal, he met another medical entomologist, Kevin Kobylinski, who was conducting malaria research. They went out for beers, and Kobylinski described a mysterious illness—rash, extreme fatigue, joint pain, blood in his semen—that had plagued both him and a colleague, Brian Foy, after a trip to the country the previous year. Foy’s wife, who had not been to Senegal, had also become ill, nine days after his return to the United States. Haddow immediately suspected Zika." http://www.newyorker.com/tech/elements/ ... can-spread

Those surf trips to Iceland are looking a lot more appealing.

Well maybe they need to release more genetically modified mosquitoes to try to stem the spread of the disease. Unfortunately most people who are affected show no signs so can be a source of infection for others without knowing it . Hopefully a working vaccine can be manufactured. I wonder if this will affect the attendance at the Olympics?

It probably won't. They say that if you actually get the disease, the symptoms are not that severe. That will probably allay people's fears. As someone who has had to deal with the effects of a virus, I know enough to avoid picking up another one if I can. It is not the virus that you have to worry about so much, but your body's response to it (inflammation). There's also a good chance that you might be the one who does have a debilitating reaction to it.

Since Mosquitos carry many debilitating, deadly and viral diseases many of which if they don't kill you can make you sick for the rest of your life!
Best rule of thumb, if you are going to a mosquito prone area, cover up and don't get bitten.
Part 2. if you know of the diseases in the area and there are preventative measures , take them or do them.
Part 3. Mosquito nets.
Part 4 Strange fevers or symptoms, get a medical check up ASAP.
Here are a few of the diseases

Malaria
Chikungunya
Dog Heartworm
Dengue
Yellow Fever
Eastern Equine Encephalitis
St. Louis Encephalitis
LaCrosse Encephalitis
Western Equine Encephalitis
West Nile Virus
Ross River fever
Barmah Forest Fever
Japanese Encephalitis
Filariasis,
Sleeping Sickness
and of course Zika.
Not a list that fully covers what you can get, but if you are fully covered your risk is less.

Don't get too worried about viral diseases spread by mosquitoes, make sensible choices and don't forget other things can kill or injure you too. http://www.australiangeographic.com.au/topics/wildlife/2013/03/australias-dangerous-animals-the-top-30/

For all that having a board too big to duck dive is a pain when paddling out, the biggest annoyance is not being able to duck dive under the bomb sets that you cant get to in time. Then you find yourself sitting further out 'just in case', then discover you are too far out to catch a wave but too far in to catch the bomb wave.

There is no board to duck dive that wave except maybe a small alaia or paipo board which you can dive 30 feet down with
