Surfing Waves

Hey everyone,

I am currently on a trip through south east asia and I would like to end my journey soon in Indonesia. I plan to stay there for about two weeks and I would like to take some surfing lessons. Many friends told me that Bali or Lombok are great places to start. Are there any specific places / schools that you would recommend for an absolute beginner (with a tight budget)? I was thinking of booking a two/three day course in the begoning at a school and for the next days maybe find a local coach. What do you guys think of that? Is it better to organise everything beforehand or is it better to just get there and organise things on spot? How much would lessobs / local coaches approximately cost?

You won't learn much in a few days; one is about as good as another. I'd go to Kuta and ride whitewash if I were you. Schools pepper the beach drive and are all priced about the same. Pick one that's convienent and go have fun. I'd pick a school over a guy in the beach (lots of locals set up and rent boards/give lessons) in that the schools have foam boards that are easier to stand on (and hurt less when they knock you) and provide a rudimentary 15min briefing including how to stand up. Ambition is good but money says your first two hour sesh in Kuta will be more than enough for one day and possibly two regardless of your non paddling fitness level. Cheers!

I have taken some lessons with Paul at Up2U surf school on Legian Beach in the past. He's an ok dude and not a bad teacher if he's still around. Good price, too.
