Surf spots in Madeira?

Postby avillax » Tue Apr 14, 2015 12:08 pm

So I will be staying at a surf camp in Lisbon and then travelling to Madeira. I want to stay at Funchal since I want to see the gardens and all that but also want to try surf spots yet I don't know how expensive transportation is over there. Any ideas about surf spots near Funchal? Surf rentals? Taxi prices? Etc.

Hi,
There are a few surf spots on the north side of the island, nothing near Funchal. Taxi is very expensive, but you can get cheap car rentals. It takes a long time to drive anywhere due to the winding roads and one-way tunnels everywhere.
You need to be able to surf as all spots have take offs are on rocks, along cliffs and water entry and exit points are very sketchy. Nothing for beginners or intermediates here at all. Very few surfers around. The most I have seen in the water was 4-5 locals at any one time.
