American east-coast?

Postby FruitPunch » Sun Jan 25, 2015 11:44 pm

I live in Quebec(Canadian east coast), I was thinking of grabbing some camping gear and going to the states to surf for a month. I don't know if anyone has an idea of a place with camp grounds close to the beach where I could buy food and surf. I'm pretty much a novice, I've had lessons here and there. I have a car, but I prefer backpacking since I find it more exciting. So I guess proximity to basic things where I could buy or rent a board for a few weeks and being close to surf-able waves.

I did backpacking in Vancouver Islands in a small village called Tofino, I was able to get a bike with a surf board support and surf for cheap everyday. I've done the same in Hawaii and Indonesia so I'm hoping to find a similar case in the states?

Hi FruitPunch,
unfortunatelty, the US east coast does not offer much good, let alone decent, surf. There are 3 areas, however.
1. Long Island in the New York state: I don't know if parks are present and offer camping, but the surf is relatively consistent
2. Outer Banks in North Carolina: there are campgrounds and a few are close to the surf breaks. I have never surfed here, so cannot tell you more
3. Smyrna and Cocoa Beaches in Florida: there are campgrounds and a few are close to surf breaks. The surf is relatively consistent and the water is very warm. Smyrna Beach is very sharky. If you go to Cocoa Beach, you can rent a board and walk only 3 minutes to the pier where I like to surf when in Florida

Amazing advice, thanks a lot mate. I'll check them out, there's something that fits the bill for sure.

I live in Satellite Beach, just south of Cocoa Beach, FL. You can camp on the beach at Playalinda State Park (on the New Smyrna side), Long Point Park, and at Sebastian Inlet State Park. Happy travels.
