Summer Trip Ideas

Postby henrywing17 » Thu Jan 22, 2015 7:34 pm

Hi, I'm planning a budget 4 week trip in summer from mid august to mid september. My budgets around £1000 (including flights and everything). Ideally a uncrowded consistant beachie or mellow point/reef, I'm a intermediate surfer confident in surf up to head and a half. Options I'm considering so far are:
Nicaragua - went there last year so know exactly what I'd be getting but would need to find cheap last min flights.
Ghana - seems like a decent option, would have to keep a eye on the ebola situation.
Morocco - crowds looks like they might be an issue?
Sri Lanka - crowds again?
Portugal - living costs might be too high

Any info on the places above would be awesome or any other suggestions,

Cheers,
Henry

Where are you flying from? How did you find Nicaragua by the way, crowded?

Hi,
Morocco - you are out of season - best waves are from Nov/Dec until April, other times it gets very windy and choppy and inconsistent.
Sri Lanka - Aug/Sept would only work for East Coast/Arugam Bay not the more diverse South/South-West. It is cheap and can be fun but it's also very crowded, especially with Euro Surfers and plenty of Israelis. There is the point and some other waves in the area. Accommodation is basic, food can be ok, there isn't a whole lot to do. I personally hated it (too many people who couldn't surf, hassly locals and Israelis are the Brazilians of Europe) but plenty of people love it. Certainly doable on your budget.
I would throw Bali/Lombok in the mix there - even though it's crowded, you have way more options for waves than Sri Lanka.
I like Nica and Central/South America in general and would go back there.

Senegal can be good at that time of the year and it's not crowded.

Enjoy

Cheers for the replies guys. I'm in the UK so will be flying from one of the London airports. Overall nicaragua was okay for crowds but we did avoid breaks that have a reputation for being crowded like Popoyo. If I went back to nicaragua it would be to Jiquilillo as there are no crowds there, you can always find a peak to yourself or surf with some of the local kids who all rip. The spots further south in the constant offshore wind zone were busier than the northern spots.

Yeah by the sounds of it Sri Lanka wouldn't be for me, I hate surfing in big crowds. Senegal sounds interesting, I'll do a bit of research on it. I've just got The Stormrider World Guide Vol 1 & 2 so I'll have a flick through.
