Should we reserve hotels before travel? :?
I don't want be stuck at a place with no surf and have to drive all day to catch waves then drive back. :x
Some guys say go north some say south?
I have heard that if you don't have a guide you suck? :(
I also heard that it's dangerouse to go party at night?
Thanks
Jeff.

No need for that.

Shouldn't be a problem. It's a small country, and it's consistant surf all over the place. Driving all day will take you to another country.

I'd say: go west. ;)

Not true. Some areas in San Jose should be avoided at night, but that's about it.

My rec would be the Jaco/Hermosa area, it's on the central pacific coast. Great beach breaks, reef breaks, points & rivermouths all within driving distance. Jaco has the most lodging and it's cheap while being very safe. There are friendly locals, and many traveling surfers.

Here's some pic's from my last trip.

Jaco is a hole, and guides are a waste.

Jeez! Aren't we Mr. Funguy! It's the 3rd world there Oslo, what do you expect? Just because you may have had a bad time doesn't mean the rest of the world should avoid the city of Jaco. Besides, it's just a starting point, if you have your own vehicle and a map, a guide is totally unwaranted. You can hook up with some very good guides at Loma Del Mar (surf camp) if that's what you want. They provide lodging, 2 meals a day, transport from and back to the airport in San Jose, transport to surf spots & guides, all inclusive. Here's a pic of one of their villas and their pool.

But if you are more adventurous, just go it on your own. There are many, many spots, all you have to do is turn down any dirt or paved road that heads towards the beach.

Jaco is the surfing capital and a natural place to start if you don't bring any equipment.

However, it's the closest beach to SanJo, so it's very crowded from time to time. Ticos are not famous for picking up trash after themselves. Jaco is dirty, full of hookers, small, shitty waves and there are loads of people trying to rip you off. Everything is more expensive in Jaco compared to the rest of the country, bar maybe Tamarindo.

And just for the record, I had a great time there. Back in '99 the place was very cool, but when I went in '03 I couldn't stand the place. Maybe it's just me, growing up, getting tired of hookers and booze.
