Bali in wet season Nov/Dec for beginners

Postby royden » Mon Jun 23, 2014 3:34 am

Hi!

Sorry I don't know anything about surfing but hope to pick it up end of this year, may I understand would it be a good time end of the year to pick up surfing in Bali? Else is there any parts of Indonesia/South East asia that would be better?

Does left or right hand wave matter for beginners? I thought I would be more comfortable surfing with my left leg in front from wakeboarding and snowboarding.

Which part of bali would be a good spot to learn during wet season for beginners?

Thanks a lot!

If you search around the forum there are a few threads on a similar topic re Bali for beginners; plus I'll let others with knowledge chime in, although there arent actually that many good beginner places in Balie.

I gather Vietnam is a nice beginner place during Nov - March, although its 'winter', and there is also Sri Lanka

Just in terms of whether left or right - for most people, the forehand (facing the wave) is much easier. Which way is your forehand depends on your stance. If left foot forward you are a 'natural', so a wave where you turn right is the easiest (ie a right hand wave)

Of course, eventually you need to be able to go both ways

I am an 'intermediate' level surfer and have just returned from my 3rd trip to Bali, a place where I enjoy the surf very much.

Each of my trips has been in the period April till August. At this time of year the wind is generally offshore at Kuta, Legian, Padma beaches etc, and the surf there is really nice (for someone of my standard). I would say 5 days out of ten are pretty good for learning.

During the wet season, wind is more onshore at Kuta etc, and offshore on the Sanur side of the island, so you should investigate surfing spots on that side.

However the locals at Kuta/Legian I spoke to still reckon there is plenty of nice surf (with still conditions) on the Kuta side. One told me it's quite good before 10AM each day, and is often glassy when it rains.

Board hire is very cheap (e.g. $5 per a whole day, using a selection of boards) on Kuta/Legian. Surfschools seem to vary a lot in price - I don't know whether the expensive ones are worth the money they charge. You can get cheap lessons right on the beach from the guys hiring out the boards.

A few years ago there were big problems with rubbish being washed onto Kuta beach during the wet season. One of my local contacts reckons that is less of a problem now.

Cheers

Bali is awesome - wet season, dry season....you'll have fun no matter when you go. If you're a beginner, it doesn't matter that much in my opinion. Kuta beach all the way up to Legian has plenty of spots you'll enjoy. Dreamland is beginner friendly, too.

The Wet Season brings daily rain and quiet overcast days with the most rain recorded between December - February. Occasionally rainfall can also be expected during the dry season but usually at night or very early morning. One of the reasons that Bali is such a great destination is that you can travel at any time of the year and still enjoy lots of sunshine! when it is the wet season it isn't all that wet! There are downpours but then the sky clears again and the sun usually comes out. It isn't the same as the rainy season in other areas of South East Asia.
