Hi folks, long time listener, first time caller. Im looking at going to Simeleu for a week-10 days in August. In Sumatr for a mates wedding anyway so thought id tie it in with a surf trip. Anyone been? I'm a beginner/ intemediate, been surfing 3 years or so, mainly on a 6,6 surftech epoxy board. Want to surf a lot at my modest level so not looking for Pipeline etc. Reckon Simeleu's a good shout? Cheers.

You'll never ever know if you never ever go. Good chance August is in the prime swell time for Indo all over. For Simeleu look for Thailand lefts its one of the asier waves around and quite long. There are rights that fit your skill levels. Depending on which resort you choose and there are a few now ther could be easier waves nearby!
Which surftech model? might have suggestions re that!
Go enjoy and develop bragging rights. Your surfing will improve heaps! :D

Yeah I think I'm gonna go. Cheers Surf Patrol and Jaffa, actually I'm one of the many on here who've benefited from your advice over the past couple of years! Really appreciate it, thanks. I'l look out for the Thailand lefts places- the place I'm looking at staying is near a break called Dylans?

My board is a 6'6 Downing 'Da slippah' apparently.(I know next to nothing about boards- I feel like one of those kids at school who doesn't know if Adidas or Adiboks are cool and is worried his mum's got him the wrong ones.)

Just to check, has anyone travelled from Sungkil to Balige (next to southeastern end of Lake Toba) successfully? My mates getting married in Balige and I'm trying to avoid going back and forth to Medan. Cant see too many roads on Google maps, just lots of mountains . . .

Cheers!

Thanks for the compliment, I'm genuinely happy to help.
Now sadly you are not going to be able to do any road trip unless it goes through Medan the over the top of Lake Toba and down the lake to Balige.
In this case I'd look at flying Singkil to Medan and then Medan to Balige, and that will be scary enough.
Going up and around any of the great volcanoes involves third world winding roads and rubber time schedules.
You'll need your jam kerat and pelan-pelan pills if you go by road.
It will however be an adventure of great standing if you do it, if you have the time yep!

Just got back, cheers for the info! Glad I didnt try the overland Singkil- lake Toba route. Having now been there I realise how tough that would have been!

Already planning a return to Sumatra . . .
