Hello, I went to El Porto yesterday, the sun was shinning, it was hot for winter but I was a little disappointing with the waves: Dangerous closeouts.

Only pros were able to surf some of these closeouts while most people just chickened out and there was not a single corner. Is it always like this?

Avillax, El Porto is manageable for when it's small. I'm a beginner/intermediate and I've gone to El Porto on small days and I was okay. On big days, I don't bother.

I was just writing about this in another forum.

I've talked to a lot of people about this and the prevailing wisdom seems to be that the lack of rain the last few years has really hurt El Porto. No rain = no sand bars = no corners.

I've seen pictures and videos of El Porto looking insane, but every time I go there its nothing but walls.

It was barreling like a mother!$!#er when we got that THanksgiving swell, but from what I saw no one was making it. Just a few seconds throated and then--squish. Not my cup of tea.....

Thoughts?

el porto has its moments. You dont want to go there on a big west swell. Its best on combo swells which break it up a bit. The above posts about the sandbars definately has come into play. When it is big straight west, the only thing worth going out for is Hammerlands (The Jetty).
