Hey people, so I am wanting to go anywhere in asia to have surfing trip!
I'm a moderate surfer, I'm taking about 5k with me and am hoping it lasts a couple of months?...
I'm needing help on where to go and stay in asia though. Id be riding a short board and was thinking of living just out of a van? Lol,or if anyone knows of a cheap place to stay at someplace close to good surf spots that would be great. The idea would just be traveling around, beach hopping. Wanting places fairly nearby each other, seeing new places and meeting friendly people. I prefer rights. Any constructive help would be apprishiated. Totally open to ideas just needing a heading.
Thanks.

Very broad question>>
The Philippines, Indonesia and the Maldives are not especially suited to van surf touring as the surf spots are on different islands.
Taiwan springs to mind as a possibility, it is only one island and you can get a van and perhaps do what you are thinking.
Indonesia would be a second choice.
A little research would get you to an area where there are options for more than one surf spot by motorbike.
A little careful looking and you can find a cheap base to work from.
Vanning it probably wouldn't work.
In the Philippines much of the surf zone has been hit by a massive typhoon and the people would be struggling to look after themselves and be unlikely to have any let alone cheap accommodation.
Other surf zones there may be OK.
The other thing you would need to know is the visa requirements , some countries only give you thirty days and you have to go out of the country to re visa.
All these countries are slightly reactive against foreigners just hanging out without a planned itinerary and exit date, awareness needed here.
A van in Sri Lanka might be a working proposition, but you may well be advertising yourself for theft???
I've left out Japan ....too expensive.
Do you have a bucket list of spots ( yeah I know right handers)?
Also what country are you coming from?
5k what currency, AUD or US dollars in Indo that will do a number of months at feral level.

Taiwan is pretty safe for foreigners. Plus most locals can speak basic english and are generally quite friendly. However there is little to no surfing etiquette. But if you're white, most people will assume you're good and get out of your way and watch you surf. I know at Kenting that there are short lease apartment that is around $166 (offpeak) $200(summer period) per month not including bills. Bills are dirt cheap and so are the food. You can eat out for less than $6 for 3 meals every day.
Car is a bit tricky, you have to have a local license. I don't think they accept international license. However it is very easy and you can pass the test within a few days.
Hope this helps.

Cool, thanks guys. Appreciate the ideas. It is a very broad question I know, and i don't have anything really in mind other than surfing and taking it easy lol.. trying to figure out what to do. Im from AUS and this would be my first trip away from home, so it will all be a learning curve. ill look into Taiwan. im going to scrap the van idea and just take it simple finding a place to rent and surf and then move onward once iv had enough. does anyone know of a good area in Bali to stay at? im wanting to leave by the end of January.
