Where in the world to surf during June/July?

Hi everyone,

I, and a group of friends, are looking to travel from the cold north (not a lot of waves during summer) to go surfing during next summer. We are looking roughly the end of June, and planning for a three week trip. Our level is definitely beginner/intermediate, but we all have some experience. Good waves and as uncrowded as possible are our priorities. Does anyone have any tips or ideas? We're currently looking at Nicaragua and Peru, as well as Bali of course.

Tips/ideas/suggestions are greatly appreciated!:)

PTNS, hi just about anywhere would be warmer than Norway than June, and that's your summer
As for crowds, Bali provides an extreme contrast to Norway culturally but that month is among Bali's best surf months and the crowds are extreme.
You could head out further into the Indonesian archipelago and get less crowds.
Nicaragua is a bare possibility as it gets SW swells then but also onshore winds and is the rainiest part of the year, serious rain time.
Peru is dry during these months and almost swellless so maybe not such a good call. It is the Peruvian winter but still warmer than Norway unless you hit the Andes.
Closer to home Azores, Canaries and Madeira ( Madeira being a certified big wave island).
The Maldives are a better option IMO than Bali as a lot of the resorts limit the number of surfers and so your group would fill some of the surfers allowed.
Waves in Maldives are good and forgiving to your skill level, and for that reason would suggest this over all the other options.
Sri Lanka is also an option but problematic due to European escapees crowding the waves, and attitudes towards women in some areas.

Hope that helps :D

Absolutely, thank's! Have you ever been to the Maldives? Is there a few good spots, or a lot spread around?

The Maldives are a span of islands, coral atolls. Most have only one or two breaks at the most. A lot don't have breaks at all.
Tourism including surf tourism is limited to specific islands and the resorts there.

If global warm goes to it's full extent, Norway''s glacial melt waters along with other former glaciers will sink the Maldives.
Google, surfing Maldives there are numerous resorts. Pasta Point, Sultans new resort, Hudanafushi resort some have speed boat rides to breaks. Some breaks are exclusive to their island resorts.

Take care some islands only offer semi standard boat rides to breaks!

Thanks! Definitely going to take a closer look at the Maldives! Looks amazing!
We have also considered Sri Lanka, as you mentioned! You think that will suit us?

It's such a tough decision to choose where to go with so many great countries to choose from. Basically we just want to travel someplace warm, cheap, preferably beach-breaks (considering our skill-level, though the Maldives seem okay), and as little crowds as possible. It is not that important for us to be settled in one area during the whole stay, but of course, if we find the perfect spot, we will probably stay. I guess it all depends on the distances, and road conditions between spots as well.

Well thanks again, we need all the advice we can get! :-D

There are an awful lot of beaches in Australia and ideal for surfing.

Agree with Peter, if you are travelling north, any road on your right will lead to a beach, if you are going south and road on your left will eventually lead to a beach, its win win!

Sorry Jaffa but i have to correct you on that, Winter time is when we get the most swell, bigger and more often, having waves everyday and averaging head high surf, it is dry, although it is in Winter that we get this mist tht can go on for some days, but that's towards the end on july that it gets like that, i'll say Winter would be the better time to travel here for waves, central and southern Peru that is, the northern part, the tropical part only has surf in our summer, that is jan to march, but from Lobitos on down all the way, there are waves, and plenty! just here in punta hermosa we got like 15 breaks different sizes, length, strength, etc.

Thanks Perusurf happy to be corrected, often the looked up "facts" don't meet with reality so having someone local tell it like it is is really a great option.
I'd hate someone to miss out because i misinformed them LOL.
