Hi all,
Currently in Vietnam and have just over a month before I have plans to meet a friend in Singapore. Between now and then I'd like to spend a few weeks on a beach somewhere fulfilling a lifelong dream of learning to surf! Willing to travel to just about anywhere in the region. Any suggested locations that would be good for beginners with access to good surf schools, etc. Anywhere other than Bali, that is. As I already have plans to make it to Bali later in September for a few days.
Having some good diving in the area is a plus as well, since I am an avid scuba diver. Have been thinking about booking a flight to the philippines.
Any advice is appreciated!

Hi,
the phillippines are not bad to learn how to surf, the area of San Fernando in Luzon is the place to go for that. check these guys out here
http://www.sanjuansurfresort.com.ph/home/It hasn't got huge swells but nice fun waves and the people are lovely. It's cheap and not far from Manila by bus.
Sri Lanka - Arugam Bay side would be your other option in Asia if you don't want to go to Bali.
Enjoy.

Thanks, my search of the internetz actually led me to that same surf school / resort in San Juan. Will definitely look into that. Am also now considering just heading to Phuket since I plan to be in Thailand next week and seeing what it's like down there. Any insight on Kata beach?

You need the weather to align in your favour. Very small. Very inconsistent. The local kids and some backpackers go there. Not really a surfing desitinations but you wouldn't know the difference being a complete beginner, so it doesn't really matter. All you need is a board and some tiny waves to start with so you should be fine. Phillippines is a far better destination surfwise but Thailand will do the job. It's not a particularly nice place in the rainy season but there is more chance of a wave.

Philippines is good destination to learn how to surf but you have to go in good spots. Most of the surfing places in the Philippines are not consistent year round. The only very consistent place where you will find always waves (all year round) is Siargao Island, Philippines. Then you have many different kind of breaks so you can improve much more than normal beach breaks...
If looking for one very good and professional surf school, very good vibe, very good food and still very cheap check
Kermit surf resort and camp Siargao http://www.kermitsiargao.com...
Check it out you will not be disappointed...

I love Philippines. It is a wonderful place for surfing. I always love to surf in Philippines and love to visit beaches there. And this country provides best facilities and the travel prices are also cheap. I love to visit this place once in a year.

Heye,
I went to a surf school (or possibly work for. The other almost identical posts were deleted) in Kuta called UP2U Surf School
It's run by (my mate/brother/boss or maybe even me) an Australian surfer Paul and the 5 days I spent there I learnt so much about surfing.
UP2U's prices are very competitive and the facilities and equipment is excellent
Their website is
removed
Contact them they are very professional and their serviced is great
