I'm planning on taking a trip in October to either somewhere in California or Hawaii to learn to surf and I was wondering if you can help me narrow down my location. I was originally thinking San Francisco but then I started reading about the red triangle and sharktober and that got me a little scared. So then I started thinking perhaps San Diego or Hawaii...
Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

I'm in "So Cal" I would choose Hawaii hands down anytime. And take up pandarturo on his offer.

Agreed. I'm in San Diego and we generally have good surf that time of year, especially with the off shore Santa Ana winds, but the water will be cold. Because you are learning, you want to be as comfortable as possible and though I hate to turn anyone away from SD, I think Hawaii is a better option for you.
