Dependable and courteous staff who are helpful and friendly but that also know how to fun and get along with people.
Knowledgeable staff who can find waves depending on conditions and crowds.

this is the only surf camp I've been to.
http://www.sinaloasurfadventures.com/

They picked us up at the airport, all meals provided, beers extra :( .
They took us out on boats in groups of 8, to 2 super long point breaks, the water so warm-any cool spots feel nice. Surf for 5 hours, paddle to boat for PBJ sandwiches and water break in between. Go back to camp, have lunch and chill in hamocks. (Surf blown out the rest of the day)

After a week of that you're pretty satisfied. (Pile on the sun screen)

I've never been, but if I do I want to go to "surfsimply" because their instructional vids are the freaking best. They seem to be really excellent instructors.

I haven't posted on this forum much but I had to log in to say, Surf Simply! Ok, I haven't been anywhere else but all the trip advisor reviews are true! The podcasts are great, but real life is so much better :-)

+1 on Surf Simply. For a beginning to intermediate surfer, it is hard for me to imagine there could be anything better. Everything is taken care of, Guiones has really consistent surf, and the instruction is absolutely top notch. Great coaches, a really understandable system, constant (but friendly) critique and video feedback.

It's not a world class waves type of resort. But for somebody who really wants to focus on getting better as opposed to riding the perfect wave of a lifetime, it is ideal.

1) Amangati's Resort- Lakey Peak - Indonesia - nice rooms, great food and the surf out front is unreal, lovely pool, movie nights and great staff
2) Lohifushi Resort - Maledives - tropical paradise, mindboggling surf, upmarket cuisine, fun staff
3) Hotel Chancletas - Nicaragua - basic accommodation, informative, friendly owner, uncrowded waves, hammock time overlooking empty waves, super great cook
4) Nusa Island Resort - PNG - the absolute best secluded surf ever, 12 people in the camp divided into 2 boats, 6 surfers per line-up, empty perfect waves over beautiful coral reef, great fishing, private island with straw huts, amazing food, snorkeling in front of your door, falling asleep to ocean sounds at night. Bliss.

What makes it great?
Accommodation/staff/availability of transport to waves/food/location/crowds

I have not been to any surf camps but considering SurfSimply and Witch's Rock. Leaning to the latter as SurfSimply requires you to bring your own surfboard and find that an inconvenience. Witch's says they have a sizable selection and encourages you to try out new boards.

All thoughts welcome.

I've often stayed at almost feral camps and homestays around the Pacific and with long know associate families in Indonesia, but at 64 years + I am a little like a lurking grandfather so now the visits to my Indonesian families are a drop in and share several meals and offer gifts. A happy occasion for all .
My resorts/camps in order Heaven on the Planet Ekas Lombok, good adequate about $150 AUD per day, staff good surf can be good but often limited by swell options and flat spells. Possible Hygiene problems with monkeys crapping in pool water cycling system, but good swimming beach fixes that heaps of steps to the beach, no need of boat if surfing inside Ekas. Opinion good basic camp nice rooms top end of average. I'd go back!!
Nemberala Beach Resort, Roti , excellent surf, major trek to get here , staff and accommodation great, food plenty but not enough Indonesian dishes ( but that's my taste). Numerous surf options can be a little fickle, but enticing enough that I'm going back in 2014. Now booked and confirmed
My number one Kandui Resort, Playground Mentawais , epic to get there! Heaps of breaks to cover every weather condition. 5 in front of the resort. Can get boat crowded. First class accommodation and probably only exceeded by Kandui villas with a pool.
Top range pricing but well worth it. Staff crew and Manager Ray Wilcoxen will do everything to to make the trip special. Saving to go back for a month.

I've only been to one: http://www.african-spirit.co.uk/morocco ... ntures.asp but they were great. Excellent accomodation and food (they also run traditional Morrocan catering courses!), really friendly instructor. I really lucked out as well, I was the only guest they had for the week I was there so I got one-on-one tuition and my choice in where we went. Didn't feel like a surf camp, more like I was just one a surfing holiday with some buddies!! couldn't recommend them higher.

Not to highjack this thread, but you are an inspiration...did I read that you are 64? I find this awesome and hope that I am as fortunate to still be riding waves both ocean and the powdery kind in the mountains with my kids. I love it when I see more mature surfers in the lineup and boarders in the mountains!

Which of these would be good for a non surfing partner to go with? I got 1 month holiday in May 2014. I'm a beginner but thinking of using that month to spend some time with the missus + surfing.

Thanks Indy, I've been fortunate to continue surfing from 9 years old to now through the golden era of surf development in Australia and then Indonesia . When there were new spots and new boards to discover.
I'm only an average surfer , won some minor contests ( really minor) years ago. Just know my way around things by experience. Happy to try new islands and happy to know my limits and stretch them slightly with deference to my age and spirit on any given day.

BaNZ I'd consider Heaven on the Planet as a possible option for what I believe your level of skill to be, Inside Ekas but you need to know it is a lefthander however further into the bay there is a nice sandbank left and right.
Any other resort that I know I don't think you are ready.
You need to be truly self reliant in the water there are no life guards so maybe a time at a surf school/ resort could be advisable, maybe your missus could learn a little too!
Some of the softer spots in Indonesia will be just as crowded and clueless as Taiwan so all the same issues will be there for you.

HI LifeSurfAndSpa,

Please keep in mind that we are not a free ads website. Why not post some information about the area, the waves, and other useful infomation. Also consider adding some well know surf spots to the surf map.

Thanks,
