Anyone know anything about surfing in Lanzarote

Postby Lallylagirl » Mon Nov 29, 2004 5:42 pm

Hey, my family are taking a holiday in June/July and I've heard you can surf in Lanzarote. What's it like there? Has anyone been or has anyone got any tips for good places to stay? Is it OK for beginners because I've only surfed once before and my bro wants to learn as well. Also, we're taking my grandad and I was wondering if there was anything non surfing to do.
Thanks
Lauren xx

ive surfed lanzarote

i went on holiday a couple of years ago and from what i can remember in terms of beginners there is only 1 big beach that all the surf schools go to (i guess there are secret spots for the pro's). i surfed for a day with surf school lanzarote (an original name i know!?) and they were nice people, so go with them!!!

or you could take the ferry to fuerteventura (30mins) and go surfing there, i jus spent the whole summer surfing there and it was great, its the hawaii of europe!

i stayed in costa teguise, it was nice but a bit spread out, better than the other main place, forget the name but it was very englishy-lots of bars playing sky sports all day-not my thing!!!

for grandparents there are lots of things to see in lanzarote-the volcano trip is probably the most popular-you go to the top of a volcano basically. there are lots of things for grandparents im sure but since im not that old im not 100% sure!!!!

hope it helps, enjoy your hol! :D

Lanzarote, the only stuff ive heard about it that i can truely remember is harsh localism and its really windy, hence a lot of windsurfing taking place there. So probally not the best advice for me to be telling you!
Waves look epic though. Your best bet would be taking a peek at The Stormrider Guide, theyre usually great at info.

Hope this helps and hang loose

Just returned from Lanzarote. We were a group of 5 Americans, all beginners. We took lessons from Tim Jones, Surf School Lanzarote if Famara.

We all have nothing but great reviews of Tim, and this surf school ! Very professional and on the ball teaching.

Surf School Lanzarote is actually a fantastic best surf school and Tim is a star. They deal with every level of surfer from absolute begginer to advanced coaching. Loads of water time, lots of advice, good quality kit - surftech boards - massively positive experience. And I'm a very experienced surfer but I've really enjoyed the coaching both times I've been - and there is a really good team spirit in the groups - hugely positive and affirming experience. If you want to contact me I'm more than happy to answer any Qs

My personal experience last year in .. hmm.. mid August if memory serves, was a total bust for surfing.. I mean, summer is just not the time of the year to go I think. Wind chops everything up to pieces, and I was there during an abnormal 'lull'.. that was in Caleta de Famara. yes, with a car you can go exploring and maybe there are better / local spots and the local lore speaks of amazing waves later in the year.. so who knows... But for summer, I would leave it for the wind/kitesurfers., unless I was a beginner just looking for my first stand up rides on shorebreak, etc..

Last time I was there it was overhead all the time and often howling onshore from the west. Its the risk of travelling surfer. But as its an island there are always more sheltered spots on the leeward side... and the WCT was in town so got to see some serious surfing

I've spent days on end waiting for anything vaguely resembling surf (particularly summer atlantic) and other times I've surfed day after day for weeks as swell after swell rolls in - so it goes.
