Sayulita, Mexico = Overrated

I saw some videos on the internet about this spot called Sayulita, it's about 30 mins away from my parent's apartment in Puerto Vallarta Mexico. Since I didn't have a car and there are buses that take you there from PV then I decided to give it a try.
The spot was really bad, overrated, they do have one very good surf shop called Surf N Roll and that's the best of it.
The waves are about 3-4 foot, they do have nice shape, rights and lefts and fast enough even for shortboards but the spot is overcrowded, even by kids just floating next to any available surf spot, the town is not pretty, nor the beach, restaurants are crazy expensive, and many times around 1 -2 pm the waves go flat. Big disappointment.
Mexico is amazing when you have a car and you go to a virgin beach with somebody that knows the road, the water is always warm and you get to have the best time of your life, but Sayulita is the Mexican Trestles, trust me, don't go there.

what's wrong with Trestles?
Or, did you mean Sayulita is NOT the Mexican Trestles?

I have a bud who's family owns a home there. He says it's chest high and rolling on a daily basis. Has never bragged about size, but says he gets long long rides there.
He also says that it's a popular spot, sometimes crowded, but not by good surfers. On weekends the body surfers and swimmers try to catch waves next to you, but during the week it's not too bad.
Tropical water and peeling waves isn't all that bad

It isn't but I'm saying that with a car you get way better options nearby, google Quimixto, and Chacala, those are empty, beautiful spots.

Yes Sayulita can get crowded, but there's other spots to go to too: Burros, La Lancha Anclote, El Faro at Punta de Mita, San Pancho.
A friend of mine did complain that this year has been very inconsistent.

Sayulita has been on my radar for awhile. There seems to be some RV parks with hook ups at a decent price. Surfing and yoga in a smaller town. Anyone else have a spot like this that I should research? I was checking out Playa Zipolite but the reports of strong rip tides turned me off.

I have been back to Sayulita quite a few times and same story, in fact I've been hit on the head by boards from noobs that they left rolling free.
Anyways, if you're coming to the area I would recommend to stay in Bucerias. The beach there has no waves but it is 10 minutes by car from the closest spot which would be Veneros (North of Naui walking through the beach), also La Lancha is really fun, Punta Burros has localism but some people think is fun, etc.
All of these spots are on the Punta Mita Highway.
Only problem with the area is that you get waves 1-2 days a week only, not more. Also, more foam is preferred, longboards or fish. I have an "average joe" by CI and it is perfect here.

i spent three months in the area last year and, imho, burros and la lancha had at least rideable waves 5 out of seven days o the week. not great mostly but at least doable. and far less crowded than sayulita. if you're lucky, punta mita will be breaking (odds are way against it that time of year) and, if it is, it will be a blast -- long easy rights and a pretty mellow crowd, all things considered.
