Surf lessons in Kuta beach Bali

Postby Mackan » Sun Oct 07, 2012 7:28 pm

Hi

I am travelling to Bali and Kuta beach in beginning of January with a friend. We have never surfed before and are planning to stay 1 week and try learning to surf.
I have looked at Pro Surf School as it has some great comments on Trip Advisor. But there are probably lots of great surf schools besides them.
Do I have to make a reservation you think in order to avoid fully booked surf schools, or is it possible to first go to Kuta and take "drop in" lessons while there?

Anyone with experience of this?

thanks

Kuta has heaps of surf schools that are set up on the beach, I'm pretty sure you will be able to find one that can take you - if the one you have picked has good reviews, then it will likely be just as good a choice as any other.

The other option is private lessons - I used this guy http://silversurfbali.com/ who was very good, gave me some excellent tips (I am not a total beginner) and wasnt really much more expensive than being in a surf school group with 10 others. He can pick you up if you want; took me out to some good locations zapping around on his motorbike (he has a car as well). Good english, really nice guy.

If you are only going for one week, it might be worth finding out about the availability before you go. Why not contact a couple of schools and see if they have places available. If it looks like there's plenty of space you probably won't have to book.

dtc's suggestion sounds like a good one. A one on one lesson will also be more useful, you'll get a lot more attention than you'd get from a group lesson.

Thanks for answering. I think I will go making a reservation just to be sure. After reading some of the comments of Pro Surf School at TripAdvisor it looks like they have a trainer for every third student. That should be enough but I will google some for private lessons aswell before making up my mind.

thanks again

You will probably want to escape Kuta within a week anyway...Bali is fantastic, Kuta area not really my scene. Then again, I'm old and it doesnt cater for old people.

But the surfing part will be lots of fun
