Surfing Wales start of June

Hey guys,

I'm new to the forum so apologies if I'm covering old ground here.

Im 36 and thinking of heading to Llangennith with my 15 yar old son. Nothing too heavy just camping out and a few days surf at the start of June - this will be half term holidays so I'm already braced for a busy beach.
The boy has never surfed before so the plan is to get a few lessons while were there, I've seen the camp site thats pretty much on the beach there too which looks ideal.

Anybody got any good/bad experiences here or recomend any alternative spots?

Thanks in advance

Hi Rushman, welcome to Surfing Waves!

Llangennith is a ideal spot for learning to surf, it's a really great choice. As I'm sure you are aware, there are also lessons available from the Welsh Surfing Federation Surf School at the Hillend Caravan and Campsite (where you will be staying?).

hi there
spent few days at hillend couple of years ago.
was really good being able to walk straight to the beach with your board. good cafe on site and a surf shop in village.
not much else around, but if the weathers good what else do you need !!!

Rushman,
Your general plan sounds great and it is super cool to know Dad & son will enjoy the experience together.

The funny thing to me is my mind interpreted your post's subject as, "June the Surfing Whale."

Thanks for the input guys very much appreciated  and yeah SP looking at staying at Hill end providing we get there early enough to get a spot. Thanks for the heads up on the surf school too - just checked out the site and will probably go with a full days lesson.

I have surfed Llangennith all my life. I’m a true Gower local so to speak. Loads to look at and do if there is no surf. I recommend you take some stuff to allow some arty photographs irrespective of the weather. I have loads of awesome images and I am still finding more (I’m semi pro and published presently with BBC interests as I write this reply!).
Oh – an aerobie on the expansive sands rules – go buy half a dozen tomorrow . . . LooK
. . . watch the whole vid to get a proper appreciation ( I used to throw javelin – I assure you this mottha’ goes way bonkers further!).

The spinach and egg pizza in the Kings Head pub at Llangennith has always proven awesome after a few bevvies too.
You need to get your son to do weightless squats now . . . and every day else his legs will tire quickly when surfing: swim too several times a week if you can . . . surfing is a way of life and you need to have some relevant endurance to be able to really enjoy it . . . I have never stopped surfing although I have stopped most all other activities . . . I do weightless squats everyday and cycle to keep in the zone (my swimming is top notch so I don’t swim that often at the moment).
From little perfect knee high walls to monster 20ft Llangennith max-outs . . . surfing rocks and I hope you get a swell when you visit the Gower.
NOTE: You can’t rush beach breaks. It might be half an hour between sets (flat then a nice couple of waves). My recommendation is to spend one day just laying down and paddling to catch waves. The next day do the same in the morning then in the afternoon try to stand up and surf and then just keep going for it (after all you can’t stand on a wave you ain’t caught!).
As a conscientious uk wide approved certified swimming pool maintenance technician I have to mention there are no lifeguards at Llangennith, but the rips are gentle unless the surf is powerful . . . just look at who is doing what in the water for a half hour or so before you choose your area to surf. If in any doubt ask a surfer . . . say you are novices and you‘ll get an honest reply as to the conditions.
If you really need help give me a shout . . . my business is poolaid.co.uk ® [mobile 07890 2 999 13]. As it will not be a business contact I won’t be carrying insurance, just friendship, trust and experience.
Yup - this is a genuine offer of assistance if you need it.
Oh, and as a n ex-mountaineer I state here and now this summer is going to be dam hot !
[I also make durable custom carbon fiber surfboards . . . see pocketboard.co.uk ® want one!]

hahaha - I hope all goes well - surfing has kept me life motivated . . . I'm a global kick ass research scientist WooT - !

I don't think an offer comes any better than that.
