Philippines surf trip/expat trial run

Postby TheSweatyButcher » Fri Dec 30, 2011 7:47 pm

Hello, I'm from the States(Kansas) and will be arriving in Manila, Philippines February 14(tickets bought). I'll be starting at Red Carabao a hostel in Manila. I'll stay there a couple days which is located by a Light Rail Transit station.

I then plain going north to La Union and traveling the coast for some good surf spots. Once I find ''the spot'' I'm going to rent an apartment or semi-long term hotel until the end of March.
From what I've read March is the end of the good surf there.

Then I am heading south to Moalboal for a freediving course. After that swimming with whale sharks at Donsol would be very cool(Feb to May is the season).

Somehow I would like to get to Siargao Island and stay in that area for awhile. Either by slowly island hopping or a more direct route(matters how I'm feeling).

When a 90 day visa run is needed I will take a short flight somewhere close or maybe a ferry ride to Malaysia.

If someone wants to meet up or share some cost staying somewhere or crash on my couch if I have one message me. Also any links to recommend places to stay or see are highly appreciated!

Siargao is a pretty crowded spot if you're thinking about cloud9. Feb is not cloud9's best time of the year. You can try going to Surigao Del Sur, Lanuza. La Union is good in February.

Try to put Donsol and La Union on similar time frame before heading south of Cebu for Moalboal then head to Surigao/Siargao for surf.

I can recommend some places in Siargao if you want, as well as in Cebu (Moalboal).

Good luck on your trip to the Philippines.

P.S. It would be best to enter/exit the Philippines through Cebu, rather than Manila if you want to avoid long lines. Manila is quite busy. :)

Thanks for the reply, When I start to go south I might volunteer in Mindanao for awhile.

Deano71: Do you have any info on Palawan? I have read pages of post with contradicting information about surf.

Thanks

Cloud 9, Siargao has great waves. Manila is too busy like NYC. Full buildings, traffic every where and no nearby beaches but north area has many waves-- Crystal Beach Zambales, LA Union, Aurora Baler, Potipoti, Mona Liza Point, Bagasbas (South area), etc. you can find more places--http://www.wannasurf.com/spot/Asia/Philippines/ Enjoy your vacation here :D

Feb 10-12 I will go surfing at Crystal Beach, Zambales (4 hours away from Manila)
