Surfing Waves

anyone go down to the beach durring the hurrican? it was double over head at surfside.. it was amazing!! anyone have any pictures?

DAMN! thats looks awsome, we never get anything close to that up here.

it looked crowded... with all those people walking down that walk way.

whats cool though is my freinds mom says she'll take us down and let us skip school if it gets above six feet again, but I doubt my parents woudl go for it... if they did my dad would want to go...

Really? I've looked at those Ivan pics and I have to admit they look ok, but not that great really. If namino tsume thinks those are super waves, I can't imagine how much slop the poor bloke has to put up with.

I grew up surfing in South Africa and probably wouldn't go out in those Texas conditions most days. It's fantastic to hear how stoked so many people are with small waves, just going into the ocean for a fix, no matter how small and sloppy the surf is... good for you! I'm living in the Uk now and only surf a couple of times a year, but still enjoy every moment of it.

I guess I was more than spoilt growing up - here's a pic of my local spot and note that we got waves like thses twice a week all year round.

well you see that was extremely good for texas, im spoiled too so don't feel so bad, I grew up in so cal and now am landlocked here.... But yea, that was like a once a decade thing, I doubt we will get anything like that anytime soon.

im freaking 400 miles inland, so fleshin' you. I don't know what its doing every day, all I know is that I got down to bob hall pier yesterday and there was a really clean break, and it was better the day before. And I also try to spend more of my time traveling instead of staying here.

Nope. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Mine was that the surf in Texas (in those pictures) looked ok, nothing more.

Sorry to inform you that I do surf a bit and have been for 20 years. I suspect if I came to Texas during Ivan, I might have got some good waves, but I wouldn't want to have to rely on a freak tropical storm to get overhead waves. Also I am not silly enough to "run my mouth off" anywhere (are you?) and would treat locals with all the respect that they deserve. Hopefully those same stomping locals would take my comments about their local break with a bit of consideration and maturity, unlike yourself?

I hate to break it to you gulfsurfer, but Texas does not have great waves, no matter what the weather. If you re-read my post you will see that I wasn't rude about Texas or your surf, I was simply making a sympathetic observation. I also expressed the same sympathy with namino and his local break, who obviously understood I wasn't "running my mouth off" and hence replied in a civil tone.

If all locals are like you in Texas, so quick to turn ugly at the slightest provocation, then I shall consider cancelling my August 2005 trip to your state and go elsewhere. I don't want to surf with crazy locals in good waves, so I definately don't think I'll bother visiting Texas after all.

I dont know what Texas surf is like, and due to what Deathfrog tells me, It sucks. I imagine, like every other shore in the world, it can get good, but generally, from what i hear, it isnt good. Now Sandshark may of had a world class break in his back yard therefore, his view on Texas is different. "beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.'

the water is clean here sometimes, in some places it can get really bad but in generally its not bad. Texas isn't that good in general, but it can get good at times. I just can't seem to get my timing right when the surfs going off there and when im there. I like now namino put it, "beauty in the eyes of the beholder"

what if sandshark lives in like teaphoo or someplace like that, it has clean water, and compared to their waves ours are little ripples. Again, if you have lived in texas and surfed it all your life, then yea, its fun. But if you start traveling and places you kinda get second thoughts. Have you ben to california? Thats where im from, I don't we jsut don't like texas or texans. You might think were jerks, but we think you are too. I think we should all stop critisizing other peoples breaks until we have seen it in person, or better yet devise a scale on how to rate them. Mabie one could be wave hight and then frequency, like wave hight of like overhead could be a 6, and then frequency everyday would be a ten, or mabie a few times a year would be around a two, so it would be rated 6.2, does everyone get this?

o yea, also we got salty water..... I don't partictualy care for that... and I didn't see that your traveled coment, sorry about that. I guess the break you surf most is usally what you enjoy most... ethnocentricism.

I understand where you are coming from Deathfrog, but trying to judge a wave's quality out of 10 is fraught with problems. Everyone is different (thank God!) and we all prefer a certain type of wave to another. Some people love a good grinding beach break, others prefer a long, fast point break. Some surfer like reef breaks, others want deep water and sandy bottoms.

Also using wave height to measure quality is also a problem IMO. Gulfsurfer keeps saying that "Texas is overhead" and therefore has good surf - relax mate, I'm just using your comments as an example - but just because it's big, doesn't make it great. Anyone whose seen Endless Summer will yearn to surf 3 ft Bruce's Beauties rather than just about any size at their local break! (I've surfed Bruce's a couple of times and it REALLY is that good!!! )

Of course everyone prefers surfing their local break when it is bigger rather than smaller (reduced crowds for one thing ) , but I know of many waves which are better when they aren't maxing out.
