Surfing Azores/Maroc..

Postby lcu » Fri Oct 07, 2011 9:58 am

Hii everybody!
Me and my boyfriend, we would like to go surfing in Azores in December/january.
It's a good period? Where are the best spots? We have already surf in Portugal and Canary Island.
What do you think?? I cannot find surf camps, do you know something?
Cheers and thankss
Lucy

Hi Lucy, I can't tell you about any surf camps there, but in December and January there should be plenty of waves.
Perhaps someone else can help out with the info you're after.

Surfing Azores/Maroc..

Postby lcu » Fri Oct 07, 2011 3:21 pm

Thank you so much.
The other option is Maroc, near Agadir.
The problem are the fligths from Italy that arrive to Marrakesh, and we have to take the buses from Marrakesh to Agadir. It had been told me that Marrakesh now is not so secure, and to pay attention. I am a bit confused.. :?

Thank you, I will wait for other replies.
Cheers

The Stormrider guide did a vey good section on the Azores. Not the easiest or most friendliest by all accounts.
On another note you really can't go wrong with Morroco for surf and culture.

Thanks for the advices.
I'd always wanted to go to Marocco, the photos that I saw are wonderful, for the place, the atmosphere and the waves, and it's very cheap. I was only confused by the opinions of the transport with the bus from Marrakesh to Agadir, there are a lot of different thoughts that I found, but the cheaper flights arrive to Marrakesh, so I have no chances.
You think there are no problems with the transports?
Thank you really much, I am new here, and I am new with surf spots. I appreciate your advices.
Cheers

No problems with maroc at all. It can be a bit intense untill you climatise. But the people are really friendly. Only problem i have with the place is all the best waves tend to be rights, unless you head up to casablanca way. I have never done that bus journey, but it should be easy enough. have you thought about car hire, it may be the best option?

as for surf camps there is this one http://www.devilsrocksurfcamp.co.uk/?gc ... fAodjE5UPQ

Hi there ...

I´m from the AZORES/S.Miguel and there is a lots of SPOTS in the AZORES and not only in S.Miguel, per example S.Jorge Island have probably the best SPOT in Portugal in Caldeira Santo Cristo and you can stay there on an house that is to acomodate surfers the onwer is a surfer too, bellow i send you some links to check some images and where to stay.
In S.Miguel Island there Santa Barbara and Monte Verde beach where happens the WQS BILLABONG PRO 2011 and much more where you can surf.
If you need any help to get here and any information you need i will be happy to help you and anyone who needs.

@chamber66:
Thank you so much for the infos. We would like to stay in Maroc in a surfcamp. My boyfriend knows how to surf, but I am quite a beginner, even if I had experience in Canary Island and Portugal, I would like to improve with surf lessons. That's why I was thinking not to hire the car, in order to stay at the surf camp and be transported by them. I was only "scared" about the transport from Agadir to Marrakesh, where there is our return flight.
I wrote to two surfcamps,in Tamraght, and I wrote also to the one you gave me, even if I don't know if Devils Rock is a too hard spot for me. Thanks for the infos

@lusata:
Thank you for the infos about Azores, it should be wonderful and I really would like to visit them, also besides surf. I am looking for the flights from Italy, but in December they are quite expensive. That's why I was thinking to Marocco, where Ryanair and Easyjet arrive!
However, in order to have infos, when is the best period to go? Maybe in summer I can go..

Thanky you so much to all!

If you are a beginer maybe maroc and the Azores aren't for you. i know you have been to Portugal but the areas around Peniche may be a better option?

I have been this summer in Peniche (and it's really a wonderful place, I love it! There you are in peace with the world!!), and the waves were good for me.
In reality, as I said, my boyfriend knows how to surf, and we were thinking to Maroc also in order to visit it. You are right, this is my third time surfing, and even if I learned a lot, I am still a beginner!
I read that there are spots for beginner, sandy, and I would take lessons, in order to improve, and to have a guide that can help me. I have contact with the surfcamps and they assure me that there are a lot of beginner.. I hope is real.. It's real??
Which place in Europe very very cheap would you advice me? In peniche we stayed at the camping.. it was very hard, but awesome!
Thank you!!

Honestly in my oppinion you an't beat Penich for variety of waves and conditions to suit everyone. moroco in December, may be a littl on the large powerfull side, with not many options for a beginer. The Algarve is a very good winter destination and very cheap to get to, and may be more suitable. there is also southern Spain between tarifa and Cadiz, but I have no experience of this area.
