My wife and I are looking to go somewhere on vacation the first part of August. We are looking for a great place to vacation that includes surfing as one of the many options of things to do. We are on a budget which makes things harder but we want to spend about 5 days, give or take, with a nice place to stay depending on the cost. We are just learning the sport and don't want to get burned on our first trip. Thanks for any help.

Hi Atlanta,

How about Cabarete in the Dominican Republic? We get good waves for beginners (2-4 ft) all year round, so in august it is also nice. Playa Encuentro next to Cabarete is the main surf beach in the Dominican Republik. Cabarete is a village which gets some tourism but not too much. Also most of tourists coming here are mostly of the active kind as there is good surfing, kiteboarding and windsurfing in Cabarete. The town offers an easy lifestyle with some nice little bars and restaurants. Apart from watersports there are a lot of different things to do like trips to different beaches, waterfalltrips, mountainbiking or just relaxing.

I came here in january 2010 for the first time in my holidays and I liked it that much, that now I am managing a nice little Surfcamp which is located at Palya Encuentro only 200 meters away from the main surfspot. We mainly get surfers and kiteboarders as guests so it's always easy to find some nice people to hang out with.

If you are interested just have a look at our webpage << URL removed because the self-promotion is becoming tedious>>

Please let me now if you have any further questions, regardless if you want to stay with us or not.

Aloha
Nino

San Diego, CA, awesome place, many types of breaks, and a boatload to do when you are not ripping.

Hey Atlanta,

great plan. I think as well Cabarete DR would be a perfect place for you to learn how to surf. It's a hip young surfe town, full of travelrs from all over the world and besides surfing there is tonnes of other outdoor things to do.

<edit>

For surf lessons, I would suggest the surf school "321takeoff", you can find them online or just when you get here. Up to you :-)

Good luck finding you vecation destination, I hope it will be Cabarete though
Saludos, Sabrina "Estrellita"

Atlanta where do you want to go? U.S., Mexico, Hawaii, Central America? Waikiki is one of the world's best beginners spots, so is the gulf coast of the US (when there are waves). San Diego and Dominican are both great too as said in the earlier posts. Sayulita Mexico is one of my favorites for beginners. The main things to look for if you want a really easy and fun experience are: warm water, sandy bottom, small waves, wide open beach with plenty of room. All the spots above fit that criteria.
