Portugal, but where??

Hi everybody.

In Octobre I am heading for Portugal and plan to stay until x-mas. I bring my own caravan so I can settle anyplace.

I am just starting surfing green waves. Being more than 60 years old, progress is slow.

Question is if anybody can sugest a place suited for beginner / Intermediate, a camping site nearby and a place offering offering a bit of social life this time of year.

I have been in Sagres twice, and am thinking heading there, but I am open for other suggestions as well.

Tom

I recommend you go back to Sagres.
because it's gonna big swell season and at least in Sagres yoy can go to the other side and surf Luz when the swell on the Atlantic is too big.

If you are coming to Portugal and enjoy our waves on a low budget, try renting a low budget campervan.

Its a surftrip you will never forget!

Check their website at: http://www.westcoastcampers.com.pt

Surfing in Portugal??
The Costa Vicentina is the best place for surfing in Europe, more specifically ALJEZUR !!!!!
It has beautiful beaches with very good waves, like Arrifana Beach, Amoreira Beach, Monte Clérigo Beache and many others.

If anyone wants more information i can send !!! ;)

Hey Torben,

I stayed in Peniche last year at october, it's a fishing town at a peninsula. It's about 100 km far from Lisboa. There are always surfers around, so I think you'll have enough companions to socialize with. It's a very well-known surfer-place. They have great conditions there - nearly all year long, as far as I know. Advanced surfers like the spot for the tube-waves, but beginners like you will feel comfortable there as well. They have a great range of waves around the place - so also easy and fun ones for beginners. There are a lot of surfer schools around, if you want to make a course. I stayed there about two weeks, and every day some of the surf spots offered good conditions. A guy from the school there told me, that they have just a very few days in a year, where really no surf spot has the right conditions to surf.

I stayed with some friends at a holiday home from Casamundo, but they have camping sites, too, check out cm-peniche.pt to find out more.

And about the place and its sights you can find some more information here. Maybe it's something for you ;)
Wow, I am jealous that you can stay there for three months

hello everyone - i am new to the forum.

here's one more vote for Peniche. because it is a peninsula, no matter the swell direction it will be right somewhere. lots of caravan campers about and a nice campground if you want showers.

Hi everyone !

I'm planning to go surfing in Portugal in September... Is it a good time to go...?

I heard that the waves are supposed to be bigger during the winter... How is it in September...?

Thanks.

Check Peniche, there is a large choice of breaks with consistent swell and off shore winds most of the time.
If you need more details check the link bellow:

Good luck and good surf.

I stayed in Sagres area from Octobre, to end of April. Now and again I went home for a couble of weeks. During December January and February you get some wet and cold periods. The water temp stayed above 17 Deg C all the time. Traveling surfers passing. Many with vans. Some stay all winter. RV and vans use parking in Sagres. Some stay at the beaches. Lots of surfing possible. During winter month my problem was to find swell small enough. I am comfortable until 4 feet only.
Lots of sun, but not every day, until mid November and again from end February.

If you want to avoid the crowds and be in a town with a bit more life than Peniche then check out Figueira da Foz a bit further North. It's got beach breaks, point breaks, reefs, wedges, the widest beach in Europe, Nightlife and not too many people surfing :)

For a decent friendly place to place to stay check out this Surf House: http://www.fozholidays.com
