im planning a big trip which will incorporate brazil, argentina and the chile..I'm planning on spending about a month in each country...This is the backbone of the plan fly from the uk to rio then spend a month surfing the brazillian coastline working my way overland to the argentina border. Same kind of plan for argentina except that at some point will have to travel across the centre of the country to get to chile. Then its spend a month in chile and the onto oz, but thats a different adventure. I'm want to do this overland as u get to see more and im not a big fan of flying.ha..My questions are:

Is it possible?
Visa restrictions?
cost?
anyone up for it?

localism makes it tough to surf in brazil, in someplaces they just won't let you surf, and check out the surf season in argentina, they can go for months with no waves, good luck!
you won't have that problem in the pacific side

I can't speak for Brazil or Argentina, but I can for Peru. You should really consider Peru if you're looking to spend some time surfing in S. America. The entire coast is riddled with incredible surf spots, including a bunch of spots near the capital Lima. Don't forget to check out Chicama, either. Think about it.

it is possible, however, transport and road conditions make overland travel very difficult in SA, your best bet is to take a plane, quicker, safer and in the long run, cheaper. you ever see that top gear where they drive thru bolivia? alot of the roads are actually like that! you might not like flying but it will save you alot of hassles.

being from the UK i dont think you should have any visa issues, however, some countries charge certain nationalities a "departure" or "arrivals" tax, but UK is exempt from most of these, i know in argentina they charge yanks, aussies, kiwis, mexicans etc... up to $200 entrance tax, but again UK is exempt, just check before you enter the country.

it can be cheap to stay in SA, but avoid the tourist traps, trips to Machu Pichu start at around 1000 quid for the train, accom, etc... but generaly, food is cheap, drinks are cheap and hostels/surf camps are cheap to stay in. again, just research, and book ahead if you can.

also, noobinperu makes a good point, peru is a must if you are planning a surf trip to SA, i spent 2 weeks in punta hermosa, home to the largest wave in SA, pico alto, it breaks at around 7 meters, 21ft on a good day, but also lots of other awesome, more manageable breaks around that area and of course, chicama is the longest left on the planet.....do you need any more reasons?

and lastly, i would be up for it matey, but work gets in the way unfortunately, but enjoy your trip, im sure you will have a killer time, enjoy the waves and travel safe!

Should definitely check out Punta Hermosa if surfing Peru, we got many breaks in a small radius, just walking distance to 12 breaks, and more a short ride away, we do have big waves but also smaller ones and suitable for different levels and likes, if you need more info just write us info@bravosurfcamp.com, check our webpage and look us up on facebook to see our surfing pictures, the pics are divided into monthly files
