Hey everyone,
I live in Canada and just tried surfing for the first time last year and I loved it! Beats snowboarding any day. I'm looking ahead to next January or February to take a month off work and just find a place to surf and chill out. I was thinking of renting a place for a month somewhere and buying a surfboard. Somewhere with a wakeboard park and decent nightlife would be mint. My skill level is still beginner, I can stand up and do some turns in the smaller waves but that's about all I've tried. Any suggestions? Maybe a camp or something?
Chris

Maldives is a great place to surf. The water is warm and a variety of breaks for both the beginner and expert.
There are a lot of Surf Breaks in North & South Male’ Atoll
1.Chickens: Long & fast lefthander.
2.Cokes: Hollow right. Tubes guarranteed.
3.Ninja’s: Mellow righthander.
4.Sultans: Sweet righthander, picks up a lot of swell.
5.Honkeys: Long wrapping lefthander, huge inside section.
6.Jails: Very long & fast righthander, with several tube sections.
7.Kanduoigiri: Short barreling righthander. Needs a big swell.
8.Tombstones: Long righthander with hollow inside section. Needs a big swell.
9.Male’: Shifting rights and lefts. Surf Breaks in South Male Atoll (needs bigger swell)
10.Guru’s: Long lefthander. Indo style.
11. & 12. Kates R&L: Need to be lucky to get these good.
13.Quarters: very fun and long righthander.
14.Natives: Heavy righthander.
15.Losfushi/Foxy’s: Fast shallow lefthander.
16.Last stops: Bowling righthander. Lots of fun
You can stay cheap and surf daily for about $60 per day... sometimes a little more depending on the break you want to surf.

I think the overall trip with different surf points and different waves, Maldives would be the best option. Try a liveaboard, and you can try fishing a couple of times as well if you have a group of friends
cheers

We got superb nightlife here in Cabarete, DR. Spectacular wakeboarding on the river, and Jan-Feb is our prime surf season.
Shoot me a line if you need more info on surfing here in the Dominican republic.
Either way, have fun, wherever you end up going to.

Hey CanadaSurfer, if you have a month I would suggest Costa Rica. It's easy enough to get to from Canada, especially the Toronto area. I used to live on Vancouver Island. The water is cold up in Tofino if that's where you learned to surf.
January or February is right in the dry season in Costa Rica and the waves are smaller on the Pacific side then. They get larger between April and November. So it would be a good time for a beginner. I find Tamarindo too touristy, but if your looking for fun nightlife, it's a good time.
The waves are easy in Tamarindo with lots of surf schools and boards around.
Another area is near Jaco and Hermosa, you might find the waves a little too strong. The other possibility is Dominical. There are good waves just about every day of the year and if you find it too big, Dominicalito is much easier and only 4km's south.
Here is a link to surf beaches in Costa Rica.Nicaragua in the Southwest has some good surf beaches near San Juan del Sur. Playa Maderas is great and there is camping available too if you're into that.
