Surfing Waves

hey there.

im travelling to bali for 5 weeks ive been surfing for about 5-6 years but dont live near enough to the coast to surf every week. (working on it). im haveing a big dilema with what boards to take with me. im surfing a adams p1 at the moment which is a 6'1 all round shortboard. which i will take. i love surfing fishs any suggestions on the other two boards i should take?? im 5'10 and weigh just over 11 1/2 stone if that helps.

You'll need something with with more rail and a narrower tail. A dedicated semi-gun, at least 3 inches longer and a bit narrower than your usual with a rounded pin tail. You can actually just pick up a second hand real cheap over there and then sell it back when you are done.

In Indo, it's very hard to turn the smaller boards, designed for smaller waves, as you'll be going very fast. Plus the longer board will give you more stability and better paddling power. Don't take any type of small wave board (e.g. fish). The 6'1 will only come in handy on small days at Kuta beach, you'll want more board for the reef breaks. The board you should be surfing all the time is the semi-gun similar to what I mentioned.

Trust me, I made the mistake of riding a 5'11" and 6'0" because I had no trouble paddling in, so saw no reason to ride a longer board but found it really hard to do hard carves at speed. I stepped up to a 6'6" rounded pin and loved it. That's a lot of board for me, but in those waves it feels like a small board as you just have so much power. I now have a 6'3" rounded pin for my step up and save the 6'6" for much bigger days. I wish I had stepped up earlier as I'd have gotten much better rides; it blew my mind how hard I could carve when I had more rail and a narrower tail.

sweet as just what i needed!! thanx. gonna keep my eye out on the net for a decent semi-gun definatly go for a 6'3 6'4 rounded pin. maybe get a bigger wave board out there if i cant find one cheapish befor i go.

buy one there mate, go to Kuta, Poppies 1 or Poppies 2 have loads of cheap board shops. also, one tip, ignore the people trying to sell you stuff in the street, i mean dont acknowledge them at all, then they will leave you alone. enjoy your trip, the place is great, a real one off

If you decide to buy in Bali, go to Poppies 2 and the store is called Avocado. It's less than 100 meters from Bounty hotel. And don't forget to bargain down, I mean really bargain. General rule of thumb is start at half of the price they offer you and work your way up. And yes, ignore all the people trying to sell stuff on the streets, don't even make small conversations as they can be really pushy.
