It's not as carefree as it used to be. You have to be extra careful because the stuff is kind of happening randomly -- but with increased frequency. Don't do any drugs down there. Don't bring them and don't buy them. Remember, an automobile accident is against the law in Mexico. So, becareful while driving. If you witness an automobile accident, you'll also usually see the drivers and passengers run away. That's so they don't get arrested for causing an accident. Also avoid driving the country roads at night. That can be pretty dangerous because of crazy local drivers and banditos.
ok, this is a bit of an overexageration, im working in and around mexico at the moment and havent had any problems in any of the citys and towns ive been to. its like anywhere you go in the world, you can get arrested in the states for drugs, england, anywhere. same as getting mugged, in car accidents etc... it can happen anywhere, plus car accidents are NOT against the law in mexico, the mexico of today is much different to 20 years ago.
dont be scared off by hearing such things, most of these are untrue and the surfing in mexico is spectacular, i love surfing costa Azul just outside of cabo san lucas, specifically zippers, its a great wave, and on smaller days is usually uncrowded, ive been out there with just me and my friend. and there are quite a few other nice spots around. plus its a big tourist area, lots of people around and very safe. big spring break spot.
also mazatlan, la paz and peurto vallarta are great places to surf, but cabos my favorite. check out mike doyles surf hotel in cabo. great selection of boards, from robert august longboards, to rusty shortboards and everything in between. right next to zippers and another fun wave infront too.
i hope you enjoy your trip, see you in mexico!
