Western Australia - Help Please

I am going to Australia in January to live for 6 months. I have connections on the East Coast near Brisbane, but have heard great things about areas north of Perth. Specifically around Geraldton. I am not a very experienced surfer, but this area is what I have my mind set on. I am looking for a smaller city/ town to live in where I can rent for a short period of time and get a part time job. Do you guys think this will be possible? I just want to be sure to go to the right spots so I can get good surf. Comments? recommendations? Concerns?
Thanks a lot

Geraldton is infuriatingly windy - it's no coincidence they call it a windsurfers paradise. Shitty fickle waves too. FUrther north round Kalbarri are a few epic places, like the infamous Jakes, but if your not very experienced I wouldn't recommend it. Very rippy, demanding point break that leaves no room for mistakes or hesitation.
Sorry I couldn't offer more positive help, but those points I do know. I also operate a small surf travel website, << which you don't get to advertise free >> but haven't got a lot more to offer on Western Oz unfortunately.
Good luck though, its a spectacular part of the world, with some amazing waves on offer.

South of Perth are some excellent spots. How far away are you willing to travel?
