Surfing Waves

Hey,

In about a month I will driving down to Florida with two friends and we are looking for a good beginners spot in either North Carolina, South Carolina or Florida (North of Fort Lauderdale). I have some experience, I spent two weeks learning the ropes in Oahu. One of my friends has surfed once in the Hamptons and the other is a surf virgin. So we are looking for a good easy spot with hopefully long waves that we can rent long boards. Any Ideas?

long wavesxeast coast doesn't really happen much. but the outer banks of north carolina are probably the best place to learn on the east coast, especially during the summer. while some of the beaches in town can get crowded, there's always spots to go to that are completely empty. there's almost always small scale surf that's easy to learn on, warm water, sand bottom, and lots of surfshops to rent boards.

which side of the Outer Banks is the most consistent for surf?

northern outer banks. just because it's mostly east-facers. typical summertime swell is ese 1-3ft groundswell. depending where you're staying, south facing beaches are about 45 min-an hour drive away. so if a south swell is on its way, and it's blowing north/northeast, go there. much further south, the core banks, emerald isle, wrightsville/wilmington, etc, all can get decent surf, just consistently, northern beaches are typically better.
