Hi all,

New to surfing.. just tried it this year and loved it! So I'm looking for some surf spot advice.. particularly for Ontario GTA. Any suggestions?

If you must remain in or near Ontario, then you will be surfing in large fresh water lakes. Perhaps you know this. Anyway, go here to learn about some specific breaks:
www.wannasurf.com/spot/North_America/Ca ... index.html
(be sure to scroll down)

If you are able to make your way to the east or west coast, then go here and select either or both:

Here is another interesting forum. By reading through this page, you can learn the names of Ontario surf breaks:

Last one from me. Here is a link to a description of surf conditions on the Canada side of Lake Erie:

Hey Mel,
glad I could help a little bit. After you find a few breaks, let us know what you've discovered.

Hi Mel!

Welcome to Suirfing Waves! Given your location you might want a good wetsuit and booties - assuming you want to surf more than once a year. I understand even a 3mm "fullsuit" increases your actual surf days a lot so that could be the place to start equipment-wise.

Have you checked out http://www.greatlakesurfing.com/ yet? They may be able to help. Predictably it looks like most of them are male but there might be a girl or two amongst them. IME sharing waves and rides with another woman seems to be a big help in boosting your confidence and progress in the early days. Unfortunately you are kind of on "the fringe" of the surfing world in your location and the fringes still seem to have more than their fair share of testosterone. Driving can be helpful :P Combining surfing and camping trips can be great fun!

I'd also try to find the local surf shop and try to build some kind of relationship with the staff. And by "surf shop" I mean somewhere that sells all the gear and where the staff actually surf. That kind of place will be no end of help. being femal is an advantage here because you can scope the place out by pretending to go in and look at the "surf fashion" ;)

You might also want to check out our very own Great lakes thread at https://surfing-waves.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=379.

Gosh that looks cold there Craig... but at least I can drive there and not have to fly :P
*writes east coast on list*

Will keep you posted on that Billie.. still in the process of getting gear and with summer here, I'm in no rush since breaks seem to be hard to come by at this time... probably more towards the fall.

Thanks Doug! As it turns out, my friend's father-in-law owns a shop that has access to all kinds of gear and the best part is we can order what we want at cost ;)
He also can get us hooked up with some of the other local's :D Of course if I see a surfer... I never miss the opportunity to have a chat

Hahaha! Sounds like you are hooked Mel!

A word of warning, some by name of Slater once said... "Surfing is like the mob or something. Once you are "in" you ain't never getting out." :D Highly addicative fun.

So have fun! And please do keep us updated on how things go for you. Personally I'd love to hear more about Great Lakes surfing.

There's an "entry level surfing flick" called "Step into liquid" (Dana Brown) with some footage of Great Lakes surfing in it (Wisconsin I think). It's worth a look. Especially since the movie is on the box from time to time.

Gear at cost? Lucky you!

Thank you, thank you, THANK YOU! I'm Canadian and learning to surf while living in New Zealand. I'll be returning home next April and dont want to give up my new passion and have been wondering where the best spots to surf were at home. I had no idea you could surf on the Lakes, so am thrilled about this and totally checking it out when I get back.
