Where to go surf in February?!

Hey,

I am based in england, and am looking for a place to go surfing next February with some mates. We basically wanna get some sun and have a good laugh!!!

We aren't very talented,..beginners definitely. But not complete beginners....

Basically we don't wanna spend TOO much money, and its probably best to keep it not too far away otherwise flight costs are extortionate.

We had thoughts about the Canary Islands, should be a good season for waves in february and also pretty warm compared to england.

Any ideas>!?!

The Canary Islands are a good choice for a winter surf trip. There are waves for beginners and it is not too expensive to get there and stay for a week or two. For more information on surfing in the Canary islands visit our Lanzarote and Fuerteventura information pages on our main site.
Another option for lucky English surfers is the road trip. If you can get hold of a van why not sling a couple of mattresses in the back and head for the south of France. It will be roughing it but it has the makings of a classic surf trip - if there are a few of you it is a really good cheap option, and there are tons of waves in Feb. When you get back from your trip come and post again and tell us all about it in the Surf Trip forum. Surf trips are the best - hope you have a good time!

Yeah a surf trip sounds cool,

Do you knwo how old you have to be to hire a van?! You see im only 18,..you reckon thats too young?! I do have a full drivers licence though.

What about the age to drive in FRANCE anyhowz> Is there a legal age?! I think its 18 too. Is it different if you drive your own car over from the channel than if you hire one out?

Well its souds like a well good idea. What sort of gear do you think i will need (wetsuits) etc for the south of france in this weather?

I'm not an expert on van hire but you might find it tough at 18 to hire one. Get one of your mates to take you down in their van - it will keep the costs down. Driving at 18 is ok in France.
The water temp will still be cold down in France so you'll need the same gear as surfing on the south coast of England.

I just got a surf board and winter wetsuit with the intention of doing some uk winter surfing. However, all my mates think I've gone insane. I am looking for someone or a group of surfers to catch some waves with, that's all. Shall I just go to the beach (300 miles away) on my jack jones and try to find people or try and find someone first? As a relative beginner, I'm enthusiastic enough to go on my own but have been advised against it for safety reasons etc. As the waves only seem to break on the west of our cold country, I'd be looking to travel to cornwall/wales.
Alternatively, I'm 25 years old if you need someone to drive your camper van to France!!!!!!!! 8)

Hi Fury, and welcome to Surfing Waves.
Good to see that you are having a go at learning to surf. Do not listen to anyone who says you are insane to surf in England in winter - as someone who learned to surf my first waves during an English winter I can tell you that there is no better time of year for good waves. Sure it is really cold but you can score some epic waves if you keep an eye on the weather charts.
I am sure that you will be able to find some surfing mates if you keep checking back to the forums here - the surfing forum has only been online for a couple of weeks and the visitors are increasing. There are so many surfers in England that there will probably be at least one in the local town, no doubt in the same position of needing some surfing buddy for the weekend road trip.
If there is a demand I may do surf dating forum - find your ideal surf trip friend online!

Morocco has more to offer than the Canaries if you want to do other stuff as welll as surf (and drink)

Good selection of waves, fairly cheap to get to and cheap once you're there.

Hi Dan, welcome to Surfing Waves

Morocco is a great place to surf - check out our information on surfing Morocco at www.surfing-waves.com/atlas/africa/morocco.html

Surf is great throughout winter and there are so many quality waves that it makes an ideal destination. I would suggest getting a cheap flight to Agadir and heading north to some of the great waves along that stretch of coast.

I have only been to Morocco once - it was flat all week, I was gutted. Still, that's surf trips for you.

Morocco may not be the best place if you are taking your girlfriend/wife to - it can be quite an intimidating time for a lady - especially if she is on her own while you are surfing all day.

Hi,

My wife and I are travelling to the UK from Oz in 3 weeks. Our plan is to buy a van and head south for some warmer waves. Was planning on going to Morocco, but am a bit worried about leaving the wife on the beach(she doesn't surf). Has anyone had any experiences they can share? Would I be better off getting a cheap hotel or something?

Also whats it like driving from the UK to france, spain, portugal etc? (Is it a problem driving on the right hand side of the road in a left hand drive vehicle?)

If Morroco is too heavy for leaving wife alone would it be worth just hanging in portugal? Or maybee going to the canaries?

So your coming over to Auz ? well you will be safe over here , My other half hates surfing and the beach in general, but she comes along sometimes , just make sure you get one of those UV beach tents about $100 and a good book !!
