Hmm, well I wasn't sure if this was the right place to post this, sorry if it isn't. Well, I really wanna surf.. but I live in upstate New York and visit Long Island too. I am going to Hawaii this summer to surf though. :D So I figured that I could maybe just windsurf or kiteboard on a lake instead because there's no waves around here. I think kiteboarding looks like quite a bit more fun. The finger lakes are about an hour away and Ontario is like two. I just really wanna do something fun during spring and summer that's similar to surfing. The air you get with kiteboarding seems a little intimidating but still looks like fun. Windsurfing seems kinda boring though. I was just wondering if I could get some info on both, what you guys prefer more, info on the learning curve, where to buy/what to buy and maybe some spots to go. I really appreciate a lot thanks. :)

Oh on the map, pink is where I live, blue is where I know I can go.

i never windsurfed or kiteboarded, so this is my take. kiteboarding is hard. lessons are usually 3 days, the first day/day and a half are spent just learning how to control the kite. i know some people who have taken like 2, 3, or 4 of those 3 day lessons and still have trouble doing it. it's super expensive, lessons and the gear. i never windsurfed, but it seems easier, but kind of boring unless you're windsurfing jaws or something. lake ontario, if you're lucky, sometimes has surf, at least i would imagine so.

personally, i would go with a longboard. from your avatar i assume you skate, so it's quite easy. figure out if you just wanna cruise around, bomb hills, slide, etc, that will decide on boards for you. most people start with sector9's, because they're available easily, and not a bad cruiser. one of my favourite longboard short videos:

Yeah unfortunately Ontario only has any activity during the winter. You ever been upstate New York in the winter?? lol I do have a longboard skateboard though. I ride an Arbor board, it' amazing, just cant ride it with all of the snow. You also think windsurfing sounds a little dull? I might eventually try snowkiting, but there isn't much wind around here. I think I'll try out kiteboarding though. I have a decent sense of balance and could probably master it in a couple of days. Thanks for your advice man.

yeah, windsurfing just seems boring, at least flatwater. well, for right now, snowboarding is your best bet. deep pow snowboarding is similar to surfing. i love it. i'd rather be shredding fresh pow than sitting in a park all day.
