Heya. I'm heading to Kavieng in Papua New Guinea for a 9 night boat based surf trip. Nusa Island Resort is in the area.
I'm hoping to hear from other surfers that have been there, particularly on a boat trip.
Any need for malaria tablets up there? I don't imagine any mosquitos at night on the boat?

Hey there,
I would rather you bring malaria meds. Better to prepare and not need it than not have it but need one, right? It's called KINA tablet. I know you can get them in drugs store in Indonesia, easily, but I'm not in other countries, or where you are right now. Ask a pharmacist anyway. I would worry more on dengue fever though than malaria, because it's also a mosquito caused but it's actually deadly. I survived dengue 3 years ago, but was hospitalized for more than 1 week. Here's what you need to watch for, the dengue mosquitoes come out in the morning (6 to 10 am) and in the late afternoon (around dusk, 4 to 7 pm). They like clean places (bedrooms, bathrooms, and piles of dirty laundry). They're small, black with white stripes. Because they're small, many times, you don't realize when they bite until they already got some of your blood. So be extra careful. This also goes to all of you who wants to go to Bali, Sumatra, and Java.

Cheers for that indahvoo. Your the second person I've heard of that has contracted dengue fever in PNG. I will be packing repellent, sleeping nets and malaria tablets!
I'm based in Australia so have a choice of malaria medications. Haven't heard of KINA but will probably get Doxycyciline or Larium.

You should try to bring some malerone with you. If you do get malaria while taking doxy or larium you now take malerone and it kills the parasites.
Some people take malerone by itself but i think its a better cure than preventative and if you get malaria while
using malerone you can not take it again to get rid of the parasite.
Larium can have bad side effects.
