Surfing Waves

Anyone going to Bali in Feb? I'm going out for the first time. First time to Bali and firt time surfing. Anyone want to hold my hand? It's always good to hook up with someone when away from home - sob sob.

got to say bali is the the most frendy place kuta beach is still a farly heavey wave and the rest are mostly shalow reefs which isnt great for learning on it is a prity cool place though outherwise and some amzing things to see

thanks for the encouragement. I've been trying to decide where to go - but not had much advice, so I've gone for Bali. I've paid off the mortgage, quit my job and off to celbrate!!

haha sory just warning you there is stacks to do besides serfing id maybe try get a few lessons before you go or something.you may be ok in the white water on kuta beach but i got to say the water was a litle frutey and a frend was pukeing buy the time he was out back n the plus side there are stuning sunsets though from there and beer and food is amazingly cheap

I went to bali with no practical prior surfing experience (about a total of 12 hours surfing crap Miami Beach on a beat old NSP mini-mal) and came out two months later able to surf and super stoked. I surfed almost every day for 5-6 hours and totally thrashed myself. It's certainly not the easiest place to learn; if you can hook up with a couple friends who are either the same ability level as you or a bit better it will definitely help. Just really watch out that you don't drop in on the locals, it will make the atmosphere hostile. Just be friendly and respect the lineup as much as possible with the snaking tourists from... well, two places in particular, I won't mention any nationalities. And put sunscreen on the outsides of your calves. ...you scoff, but that and a rashguard will save you from a world of pain....

good luck! Bali is a fantastic time. Medewi is a good wave that is mellower than most of bali's waves. it's a trek up the coast by taxi or moped. It's not the place if you want to party but it's a solid place to go with a couple people and really chill out with waves and mellowness.

What's the nightlife scene going to be like in Feb? is it predominantely Australians? Is there a serious/professional surfer (like yourself) - amateur divide. I'd be interested to hear the low down.

Nightlife? Now we're talking. Well, Bali has just about anything. If you like to dance and drinks, there are many clubs you can go to. Happy hour starts around 7 pm all the way to 11 or midnight (depending on the clubs). Drinks are cheap. Beer costs about $1.50 (American), mixed drinks is about $2.50 to $5. Shots about $2.50 - $4.50. You can dance all the way until 5 am (actually, I think the club 66 stays open until 7 am). If you just like to watch sports and drinks (yes, drinks is always included in nightlife activity), there are plenty of bars where you can do that too. If you just want to lounge and have good dinner, there are places for those too. Now, here's the extreme, if you like to salsa dance or would like to learn how, there's one place (that I know of) where you can do that But around 3 am, watch out for the ladyboys. They hang around the clubs and pubs to find drunken males who cannot tell the difference (you will surely know in the morning ) And yes, mainly the foreigners are Australians and or Europeans, I hope that doesn't bother you. Where are you from anyway? Oh and if you want to learn to surf, the Australians (most of them) will gladly teach or share their experience. good luck buddy!

sounds fun, I'm from the Uk. I learnt to spot the ladyboys in Thailand - is there a good compliment of females around at night - or is it mainly men - just checking out the competition!!

Would you recommend just turning up and checking out hotels? are there some to avoid?

As for ladies, yeah sure there are many, but still be careful with them, you don't want to end up broke in the morning.

I mean to stay - finding a decent one. Since then I've had a reply from someone called Slim - who runs a website Baliwaves and he offers a room for 15UsD - which sounds cheap and easy. I've also just arranged to go to morocco after all in Feb - because a friend is free to come out then and do some trekking - so I'm not going to be in Bali until May. Spoilt s*d that i am - I'm going to both places after all. What the hell - you only live once.

$15, that's about right. But of course don't expect fancy smancy hotel. Just room to put your things and crash at night (or morning). Oh well, I may be in Bali anyway in May. Have fun in Morrocco and do tell me all about it (since I don't think I can ever afford to go there).
