ITs very doable to just rent a vechicle and take a tent and have the usual logical safty precausions of taking as little valuable things as possable and keeping them looked in the car.

I'd still reckomend having a cheepy accomidation as a base with a car tho. You can drive all round the island in 1/2-3/4 of a day so plenty of oppertunity to check out all the areas.

Be careful what you leave on display, I had my rental car broken into while I was surfing at Cotillo while I was in Fuerte.

Rather amusingly, the cleaned the car out, the deliberately left me ten euros and my mobile on the dashboard. (They were in the glove)
At the time K800's where kind of expensive so i did appreciate it, but not as much as I'd have appreciated not getting robbed in the first place!

Hey <edit>
Don´t know who you booked the package with but I would recommend you watch out for some surfschools though, they are not all what they seem to be !

Greetz... Sara

cheers for the heads up are you refering to meals, acc or the transport part. not interested in the surfschool part.......
I booked online through united surfcamps and my booking is with islandboarders surf school.
the most important part of the service for me is that they take me to wherever is pumping and a some good ol local knowledge!
Do you know anything about united surfcamps or island boarders?
