Is there anyone still active on this forum who surfs around Houston?
I ask because there is a very good chance my company will move me there in a couple of years and I'd like to know if this is something I should try and avoid completely.
Apart from the tanker waves are the waves in that part of the Gulf of Mexico consistent? Large? Small? Comparable to...?
Also what is it like living in Houston for someone who doesn't have a bible belt, gun totting, passport suspicion mentality?
Cheers!

Let me guess mate, you work in an oil company or service to them. What I see in common between Aberdeen and Houston is oil
I never live in Houston, but I was just there about a month ago. If you think about surfing there, I doubt it's a good idea. But a few hours down you may be able to surf at Padre Island. It's still the US area. Clean water and lots of college students partying on Spring break. Houston is just like any other American city. But it's in Texas, the Southern are known for their hospitality. You shouldn't worry much about moving there. You'll fit in just fine. Remember, Houston has many oil companies who have employees from all over the world (Aberdeen included, in fact, I know this for a fact because I know someone from Aberdeen there), so, no worries. Good luck!!

Houston (a poem, sort of)
large and sprawling
hot and humid
best and worst of Texas there
Cowboys, Indians, Mexicans, Blacks, Cajun, all others, too
occassional short and long visits for work, but wouldn't live there
Surf?
Ha ha

Was born in Houston, left at 19.
50 miles to Galveston, 90 to Freeport.
Might be hard to believe but there is surf on the coast.

I'll bite...
I'm originally from Sugar Land (suburb of Houston), which is a really nice place by the way, I moved away to college at 17 and havent lived there since but go back all the time because of family/friends/old girlfriends. With the right crowd, you will never run out of things to do. It is a large bustling city... too much so for my taste. You shouldnt be too out of place as there is plenty of culture to blend out the Texas stigma if you are worried about that. The biggest downside to the city is traffic... probably the worst I have ever seen... and yes I have lived in LA.
As far as surf goes... definitely not a mecca of surf. On the flip side, you can surf there. There are enough winter storms + summer/fall hurricanes in the Gulf to make some big days. It is a drive to get to the beaches, especially if you live in the nice areas of town, like Sugar Land. If you do intend to keep surfing, you must stay VERY flexible and pay constant attention to bouys, forcasts and webcams as the waves are very fickle. Good luck with the move and feel free to message me if you want to know more. I know more about that city than I care to.

Cheers for that info!!
That's a big help, I'll have a few visits before any move happens, but it is always good to have peoples opinions!

And make sure you remember those hurricane seasons. It may bring big waves, but not the fun kind..
