Surfing Waves

Hello all, it’s a decision between California and canaries for January. ive read posts about famara beach saying its beginner friendly and all that, but in January, are the waves likely to be quite big, I wouldn’t be looking for much bigger than 4ft – would it still be beginner friendly in jan?
Also, for those of you who stayed there (in famara), what companies did you use to book accommodation, any good? And is a car necessary to get to famara from the airport, I presume there’s no other way of getting there so car rental might be necessary, in which case it doesn’t matter where I stay??

Ok. I'm the self appointed expert on Lanzagrotte on this site, even though I've only been there twice, as I always reply to posts about the place.

I've never been in January, but that month is the start of the big waves till spring time. I'd guess that it'd be way bigger than 4 foot, but you could find out by looking at magicseaweed for last year.

Anyhoo, for arguments sake lets just say you are going. If you want to stay in the tiny, tiny, tiny village by famara beach (is the village called Famara? I don't know) the place with 3 cafes and 2 surf shops. And you don't have boards to take I'm sure you could get a bus from the airport, or you could take a taxi. The trip is about 30-40 minutes. It sounds like you want to go to a school and I have no experience of these though there are plenty around. I don't know where they suggest you stay.

What I always suggest is get a last minute deal staying in Puerto Del Carmen, hire a car and drive to the beach every day. This way you can get decent accommodation with a pool etc and go out on the piss every night making the most of the free booze they throw at you to get you in every one of the 60 odd bars and 50 odd restaurants!

So in summary......got to California!!!

thanks real pol, or self appointed expert on lanzo, you did a good job earning it with that, yeah i figured it'd be pretty big alright, but, if, like your idea of a last minute cheap deal, theres nothing to lose...., any co.'s you use to get your accomodation? whatever's going i suppose...

yeah think the fishing village is called caleta de famara or something like that,

hmm, california looks more promising, but a cheap deal would be enticing

It was a trip to Lanza that got me hooked in the first place so I will also chime...

I can honestly say that it was money soooo well spent, it seemed like a lot at the time, but theres info that i picked up on the sesions that we had that I am still thankful for to this day.

ignore the windsurf dominance of the site.. there is a surf instuctor called Seb who is one of the sweetest kind hearted guys i have met..very generous with his time and attention, spent the whole sesh in the water rather then on the beach like a lot of the other coaches i could see out on the days we where.

we stayed in Costa Teguise and found it pretty spot on as far as compromises go... not as full on touristy as the main parts of the island..easy to get into the capital famara is a bit hard to get to via public transport so we rented a moped you could pick up gear once there.

i really do rate the place and Im pretty sure you could find some beginner friendly spots even on winter days.

thanks phil, yeah looks like quite a good place, defo something to bear in mind, i also realised, if its blown out i could do a bit windsurfing to keep me happy...
yeah mopeds, thats another way of getting around, i might go with southern california as it appears (though i still have to check) that it will likely be smaller, but yeah this place is definitely somewhere i'll go in the near future..

I can't remember what sites I used to book accommodation, but there are ones where you select your flights then you search for you raccommodation from a huge list. You should be able to get a half decent trip for less than £300.

There are loads of flights from Ireland too.
