Don't come to Costa Rica. Now that I am here i want all the waves to myself. :D

If you got the cash I'd say CR, Mexico, El Salvador, or Tahiti. :D

Hi Sarah,

Have you ever been to the domincan republic?? There is a lot of great surf on the north coast. The best surf is from Nov-March. Cabarete (Puerto Plata airport) is the place to go as it is a really nice town with a lot of things to do and to see. Close to Cabarete is Encuentro which is the main surf spot with good surf schools. Its a beautiful beach and great for beginners and also for good surfers. The water is warm the sun is shining and your are in the Caribbean!!

I would hazard Lazarote,

I began my surifng there and found Famara beach to be a great place to learn.

ps dont worry about the water temps, you will be as right as rain.

If you are a beginner, my suggestion is to go to a place where the weather is sunny, the water is warm, the waves are manageable (not too big) and break over a sandy bottom beach. That being said, I'd suggest Costa Rica. The conditions are great for learning. The people are friendly and the country is beautiful.

I came down to surf several years ago and I can't seem to find a reason to leave.

There are tons of places to learn how to surf in Costa Rica. Both Tamarindo and Jaco have a ton of surf schools, but I don't suggest going to either town as they are way too touristy and have lost the Pura Vida vibe.

Because surfing is such a popular activity, most beach towns in Costa Rica have surf schools and surf shops where you can take lessons.

I also say the Dominican Republic.
We have some of the best waves in the Caribbean here on the North Coast of the DR.
The main and most consistent spot is Encuentro, close to Cabarete.
Cabarete is a laid back surfers town with a lot to offer. Great nightlife, good restaurants and people are very friendly.
Also in the lineup are not to many problems and people respect each other. Good vibe!
Next to the surfing are plenty of things to do. Trips, Cascading, Atv trips, MotoX, Wakeboarding, Caves, etc. etc.
On Encuentro are a couple of good surfschools. We work with Antonio who takes care of our quests very well.

In other words; Surf is good with different breaks for different levels.
People are friendly, Weather is very Caribbean and the water is warm. No wetsuit needed unless you wanna lose some weight :D

The world is big and there are lot's of good surfspots. It's always hard to choose the right spot. Goodluck with it and have fun on your holiday.

I'm off to learn in Morocco in Feb, for one week and then trek/tour for a couple of weeks after. I don't know if I'm allowed to advetise on here, but type in surf maroc and you'll find the company - looks good to me -hence why i booked, lots of different options for budget/luxury - close, warm, cheap - got my return airfare with ryanair for £20 to Agadir. I would say I'll let you know what it's like, but you'll want to have booked by then. There are other companies based in morocco as well. I was going to try Bali, but a friend of mine is coming out for my 2nd week to do the trekking - so I went for Morocco. I'm thinking of trying Bali in May.

Good luck - hope you find the right place.
