does anyone know any decent surf spots off the west coast of scotland (preferably nearer the south)?

I'm pretty much a complete beginner so nothing too hard.

The problem on the west coast is that big ugly lump of dirt called Ireland. It stops all the groundswell and only leaves you with at best some wind chop waves which are unsurfable (someone might correct me here but I lived in Ayrshire for 20 years and never saw anyone surf). Your only real option for water based fun are activities which involve the wind.

When you get up to the Outer Hebridies or Ullapool area do you start to get surf. Then you also have the north coast and all the east coast. So I'd say your best bet is to surf around pease bay or coldingham bay which are south of Edinburgh.

Always wanted to surf Scotland for some reason.

Real Pol; you ever surfed around Thurso? Feel free to tell me about it.

Yeah I've been up a few times it's a great place and surfer friendly with places to change, campsites, wild camping etc. There are loads of great breaks for learners and good surfers. The further west you go from Thurso the quieter it gets, not that Thurso is crowded. The water is also warmer for me because you're in the Atlantic and not the North Sea.

For a surfing trip in Scotland you really need to visit the north coast around Thurso and the Outer Hebrides (I've never surfed there myself), possibly also the Orkney and Shetland Islands.
