Hi Everybody....

Now I need a lot of help... I've been thinking that I would like to go to Australia for a while and learn how to surf (I've only tried it twice so I need to start over). I've learned that if you're from Scandinavia you can get a one year work visa. So I thought that would be perfect... But jeez where to start? Does anybody know of a great place to stay and work in Australia, and ofcourse learn how to surf. Do they have surf-dorms or so???
I even thought it could be cool to move in with a local who have a spare room, and good knowledge of the surf.

Any help is apreciated :D

Hugs Louise*

my bosses and their children are moving to australia in october to work. they'll be teaching surf lessons and leading kayak tours, the same stuff they run here in the states. i forget exactly where they're gonna be, but the visas took a longgggg time to get. so start planning now. pretty much surf everywhere there are major towns, a lot of reef, a lot of sharks. sounds fun though, good luck

Umm, I'd be looking at either Sydney or Gold Coast, especially if you're thinking of taking a work visa.

Both have their advantages and disadvantages, but probably Sydney wins if you're thinking of spending a full year in Australia, since it's a bit more central, there's plenty of work, and plenty of beaches and surf schools, AND the heart of the city is only a 25min trip from a beach.

As for the Gold Coast/Surfer's Paradise, it's a bit further away from international airports, and aside from the beaches, there's not much to do...

I wouldn't bother about melbourne, since it's a bit cold, and the surfing is a fair distance from the city.

If you need more info, PM me.

Oh, and I should have mentioned.. there aren't any Surf dorms in Sydney, but there are plenty of surf schools that do day classes.

not sure about the gold coast though.

Wow you guys are fast... Thanks a lot... Funny you speak so well of Sydney... From what I've heard elsewhere, it's too much of a big city to really have any great surfers around. But hey I'll look it up...
Again thanks.

 Almost all of Australia's greatest pros come from Sydney. With most from Narrabeen and Queenscliff. Plus NSW is the best surf state (in terms of consistency throughout the year) in Australia.

Ever heard of these world famous names?
These guys are all from Sydney:

Midget Farrelly
Nat Young
Tom Carrol !!!
Damien Hardman
Mark Occhilupo !!!
Simon Anderson !!!
Barton Lynch
Layne Beachley !!!

And there's a fair few on the WCT (Dayyan Neve, Luke Stedman, Tom Whitaker, and going to be on the WCT next year (Chris Davidson).

Hi LouisePii!

I'm a scandi myself ;) I spent 8 months in Australia; for the mostern part in Manly, Sydney. Simply amazing place! Manly beach was incredible and there's almost a wave guarantee through the whole year, and it's also a great place to improve/hone your surfing skills. Another good thing about Manly Beach, is that is has excellent surf spots in near proximity, such as DeeWhy or CurlCurl.

Go to Sydney ;) You'll love it!

PS! If you want an amazing nature/surf experience I strongly recommend SURFARIS, a 7-day surftrip which leaves Sydney and ends up in Byron Bay. You'll meet a lot of ppl in a 'camp/trip' setting like this, and the spots are fantastic!! Just imagine... 6am, you come lurking out of the dense 'jungle' with the surfboard under your arm, first you hear it.. the waves roaring.. visual contact; beautiful sets lining up (with no people whatsoever!), and just to top it off.. "the locals", the dolphins are already out surfing. Wow, daydreaming myself away.. it actually happened like that though :D Have fun!

I miss Australia!
