North Baja

Thinkin about a quick baja trip - no further south than Ensenada bay (maybe 10 or so miles south of the main town). Any recommendations or advice would be cool especially on Punta San Miguel.

I had surfed there before at a campground by Salsipuedes. Also at a spot just north of Puerto Nuevo. Not sure what its called. Just pulled over and saw surf. Both times were nothing to write home about.

I know the better surf is well past Ensenada but I can't go offroading in my car. Tried that already getting to a "secret" fishing spot at Punta Santo Tomas and that was a nightmare haha.

Gracias amigos.

[edit] The spots I've surfed definitely were not K38 and Malibu. I may hit up 38 but I don't think I want to try Malibu since its so close to the runoff. I heard that spots pretty much So Cal beach break anyway.

San Miguel is probably my favorite spot that I've surfed. It's the first driveway past the third and final toll booth. (you can see it from the parking lot)
I haven't been there for a year or two but they charge for day use and overnight camping. The rights peel through like a machine I've found the dawn patrol best, I mean 1st light you should get 1-2 hours of very light crowd at that time.
If it gets crowded try sitting just south 75 feet or so from the point, when the sets come through sometimes a peak will shift over to there. (watch the rocks)

Another nice spot is La Fonda. Just south of Puerto Nuevo it's more of a beach break but can be fun and spread out with camping as well.

Yeah I know about the road to Santo Tomas, I was told it is a 6 mi road, "yeah right" try 21 miles of bumps and 3 creeks in my wife's Honda Accord, scraping bottom and cracking the windshield.

Anyway I love Baja been there many times and have more info if needed.

Make sure if you do go, you take a large crew and keep your guard up at least last I heard crime is up. Maybe check the web for news about that. Sorry don't mean to be negative just that's why I haven't been there lately.

Thanks a lot for the advice man ... I wish I had caught this before I left. We got back yesterday.

Yeah articles like that really freak me out. My wife is from Mexico so that offers some comfort but still. That is why we chose a 4-star resort just south of Ensenada as our home base. We also made a conscious choice NOT to venture south of that area even though that is where the best surf is.

The S SW was hitting Baja hard. San Miguel was flat but north of Salsipuedes was firing. We spent almost all our time at Bus Stop just between K38 and Calafia. It was pretty friggin big ...

... and macking. I was wiped out after my third wave of our first session. Second day was even bigger (pictured above) and I couldn't even get out to the outside lineup!! Embarrassing haha.

When and if we do this again, we're staying at Las Rocas which is another 4 star but has K38 as its backyard. I prefer Ensenada's nightlife over Rosarito but that's a fair tradeoff for easy surf access.

Sounds like a great trip I'm glad it went well.

I wish I had the guts to head down there, but even if I did, I wouldn't have the guts to paddle out into that.
