Surfing South WALES (UK) ...wheres it at!?

Heading up to Cardiff to resume my 2nd year of university end of September. Planning on checking out the south welsh coast as much as possible during my time there... at least it'll keep my distracted from the cheap student booze for a bit

So wheres it at?? I've heard good things about the Gower - supposed to be a beautiful area as well. but what about the breaks?! Porthcawl will also be my local break nearest to Cardiff, but I'm willing to travel up to Swansea and beyond in order to catch some decent waves.

Being from Cornwall I'm well aware of the feeling of being invaded by crowds and will enter the welsh beaches with upmost respect to the locals and the area. any insight would be amazing. roll on winter swell!

The breaks are pretty much as described in info sites on this here web.

Llangennith is a good break with good long useable rides a couple of times an hour, and I think the beach is underrated, and on the right day, like anywhere else, it is phenomenal, plus you can stay overnight at the campsite to maximize the usage of the cost of getting there.

I reckon they should have WiFi there so you can work from the shoreline !

There are some posts sticking out of the sand at Llangennith which will injure you if you hit them apparently. I haven’t seen them myself, but do a low tide reccy to make sure you know where they are ( the beach is fecking huge so just stay away from them ).

Llangennith is probably your best bet to check if you're coming from cardiff because its easy. you can stay at the campsite but itll cost you! also the carpark is a bit rubbish but we have to put up with it. theres plenty of other spots to look at if theres some swell going on. langland and caswell are worth a look when theres swell but they are crowded due to proximity to swansea.

esconsar, where abouts are the posts at gennith? ive never seen them. i know there are some a rhossili. i did hear there was a submerged tractor at geniith somewhere?

porthcawl is ok although gower is a bit better. the porthcawl breaks seem to lack power compared to some gower reefs although you can find the 'secret' spots yourself, plenty there.

llangennith is a good beach to surf as it picks up plenty of swell and can hold a pretty good wave.

to be honest, you'll be able to find too many spots there to surf in the gower, there are also some good reefs before porthcawl area that hold a good wave if you don't want crowds and don't want to travel to the gower.

excellent insight from you all. fantastic. llangennith is defo on the cards, as is porthcawl and surrounding area. freshwater looks very appealing too for a weekend camp!

whats the water quality like around Porthcawl? (this area will be my local break) are ear plugs and closed mouths a must? and when does llangenith work best in terms of the tide? cheers for the heads-up

porthcawl water is a bit poor. depending on where you're surfing. most breaks have good water quality, although if you want to surf coney (not too sure why, crappy wave) but the water quality there is very bad so be careful.

the bbc forum is a better forum for this area as many of the guys on there surf this area. give it a go and they should be helpful.

by all accounts fresh west is an epic weekend trip. i havent beent here yet but heard tons of stories from the boys i surf with in swansea.

llanginneith works best between low and high tide on the push. tends to be a bit dumpy at low and drops off in size after it gets to high tide.

yea, might do, i'll be up in college then but should have a car so will be coming home more often and making the longer trips down west and to the gower. see you out sometime

I have surfed there for over a decade, never seen them, but best be cautious – might blow them up, if they are real, some day !
