I've just moved back home to Crappy Southend-on-not so sunny-sea, from 5 years in Aberystwyth. Does anyone know of a nice easy, preferably friendly, beach break not too far from Essex that I can visit to get back into some sort of shape.

Cheers. :D

Hi Bimbledude, welcome to Surfing Waves.

From Southend on Sea you can either head north or south, your choice would depend on where the swell is. Your two nearest surf spots are Joss Bay near Margate and Lowestoft. Heading north to the East Anglian coast is probably your best bet as there are more spots on offer for the different swell and wind directions.
Having surfed some of these breaks myself I have always found them to be friendly. They are all beachbreaks.

You fool.... you should have styed in Aber!!!

I've lived there for about 10 years now (well, actually in Both now). Came here in 1994 to do a degree and have never left.

if you need to be reminded of the places take a look through the photo galleries on my site.

Good luck with your quest for surf in Essex!

I know what you mean. I came here to do a degree, then stayed to do a PhD as well, just as an excuse to stay in Aber. managed to make the PhD last five years, and coudn't bear to leave.

Decided it was better to stay living here by the sea and in debt than go somewhere else just to get a job and pay off the debt. 2 years on and I haven't paid back any of my debt (student loan), but I'm loving life!!! :)

Unfortunately there isn't much call for a Carbonate Sedimentologist in Borth, and now that the Geology dept. has closed, there isn't much call for one in Aber either. Still, I just get by, and certainly spend a lot of time in the sea!!! :)

I'm in the exact same position. Lived in cornwall for 3 years only to return to lovely Essex. I found the best place is Norfolk. If you've got a car it's about 2-3 hour drive to cromer. The waters a nice brown colour but they get some good waves. Keep an eye on the swell using a1surf.com there's a 5 dat forcast. If you fancy a bit of a mission the east coast is good as well. look into saltburn, it's just below tynemouth.

Seems there's something about Aber - came here to do a degree, and have started a phD just to stay... it's not a town, it's some kind of black hole!
