Attention all surfers:

If you plan to take a trip or two to Sumatra (Nias, Mentawai, Aceh, Padang, Sabang, etc) at these times, please be extra cautious due to the more frequent earthquakes that happened almost every other day in those areas mentioned just in this past week. They're not massive, but varied between 5 to 6.5 in Richter scale. These earthquakes also happened in Eastern part of Indonesia (Moluccas/Maluku, Ambon) which are also famous from good waves. It's not necessary to cancel your trip, but if you do go, please be extra careful as earthquakes aren't predictable like floods or storms.

Happy surfing!!!

More quakes not necessarily mean bigger waves. It's true to a degree when the center of the quake is under water or when the quake is caused by underwater volcano. Other than that it's just causing damages to the on land facility, such as hotels, hospitals, roads, airports and seaports. So you may get stuck longer there than necessary until those public facilities are fixed. As far as I know, Sumbawa is not affected by the quakes, although some small tremors might be felt around the areas. I'll keep you guys updated as I hear more from local news.

Hey y'all,

Me again giving all of you surfers updates on more earthquakes in Indonesia. Another earthquake just happened about 1 hour ago in Moluccas (Maluku, Eastern part of Indonesia). This is the 2nd earthquake today (June 18). Not too big (5.7 in Richter Scale), but who knows what'll happen next. So if you're heading that way, please be aware. Take care!!

I was north of the Mentawais in April and the first night there was an earthquake. Slept right through it, the other guys woke up but I was too buggered to notice. But yeah, people don't go to Sumatra it's deadly, stay at home ;-)

Mmm... But Mentawai is on the West side of Indonesia. The earthquake was on the East side. So, it's fine to go to Mentawai.
