Surfing Waves

Good Day!

As most surfers want to know if their destination of choice has potential for scoring great waves, I created a Squidoo lens for New Zealand surfing, currently ranked #2 in Squidoo Sports.

The lens is an album of digital photographs of New Zealand surfing. I hope my images allow those who are thinking about New Zealand surfing to see what they may experience during their surfing exploration (and adventure) in New Zealand.

Although small in size, comprising two islands (the North Island and the South Island) and numerous smaller islands, New Zealand has a lot of different types of waves to offer for those seeking both big waves and small ankle snappers- from world-class point breaks to first-class beach breaks and everything in between.

I have three boards, all Goodrum (out of Leucadia, California). A 6'3", 6'6" and a 7'0". I surf the 6'3" most of the time although I did surf the 7'0" the other day. All boards are thrusters and have square tails. I have been very happy with them but the smaller boards will go on the market soon as I am ready for some new ones.

And, given the climate here in New Zealand most of the year I am wearing either a 3/2 or a 4/3 wet suit and on those very cold winter days I have a 5/4 I can wear but the waves better be real good! During the summer we get about 3 weeks (sometimes a little bit longer) when we can go only with boardies, which is heavenly.

No worries.

The photographs were taken with a Sony Cyber-shot 5.0 digital camera. It has a Carl Zeiss lens which I think makes a big difference when compared to other small digital cameras.

I will be upgrading soon to a Canon Mark II SLR with the purpose of getting closer to the surfers and capturing sharper images.

You've been to some of the nicest spots in NZ!

I love the shot of Pines at Wainui in Gisborne - great wave, and that's a classic frame with the trees that has been in so many surf mags over the years.

Have you checked out any more of the South Island other than Mangamaunu?

Yes, there are some nice spots indeed, such as Pines.

I have too seen some classic shots of pumping green waves framed by Norfolk Island Pine trees. I have some pics of Pines but they are not very good.

Mangamaunu was the only place that had waves. We did look at many other spots but they were all flat. Yet it is amazingly beautiful down there that it almost did not matter that there were no waves. It would have been nice to surf Murderers though.

heh - I checked Murderers on Wednesday last week, was working down that way. Sweet looking spot in photos but very fickle I think. I've been there a few times, but never seen it break.

Hows the quality of surfing over there?
Do many guys surf well?

It's crap and crowded. Oz is much better

If you can find a copy of this book, have a look it's $140 but it will blow you away with some of the shots in it.

This website and forum have kindled my admiration for quality photography.
