Places to surf in Bali?

Hi,

I`m fortunate to be off to Bali on saturday for 3 weeks.

Where is best to surf? I`m an intermediate level and my girlfriend is a total beginner.

Ideally, i`d be looking for beach breaks - we`ll probably stopping in a few seperate places but have only booked hotels for the first 4 days at the moment so pretty flexible with that at the moment.

Any advice would be great!

Also, i`m not taking my board and will either hire or buy a 2nd hand board when i`m over there - are the prices quite reasonable for this over there?

Cheers,
Mike

Kuta and Legian for beachies. Pretty disgusting water quality though. For a bit more grunt, there's the peninsula - Ulu's etc. Sanur and Chenggu are nice too.

It's been a few years since I went there, so can't really help on the other questions.

Aaahhh, this is so old. I wish I knew about this before, I could've answered it sooner. Anyhow, for those who wishes to surf in Bali, if you're at least can stand on your board, stay away from Kuta. This is for people who just learn. For better waves and less crowd, go to Canggu. About 30 minutes North of Kuta. Clean water and less crowd. If you love bigger waves, go to Dreamland, it's about 40-50 minutes away by car from Kuta. Around Jimbaran area. Secluded place, deeper water. If you're really good at surfing, go to Padang Padang. That's where they have the Quicksilver championship last year. There are more places, but I haven't been to them, so can't really give you better info on them.

cheers - thanks for all the tips. my girlfriend can just about stand up on the board, so will porbably try round kuta first up to get her a bit more confidence then maybe head up the coast a bit to see what the other spots are like.

thanks, mike

I highly recomend going down to your local surf shop (I believe South Coast in PB has it) and getting "Wave-Finder Indonesia" it's a small 3x5 inch book. Excellent info.
Good spots along Bali for the intermediat were Canggu (a black sandy bottom but not for the beginner), Legian Beach, Kuta Beach (unless it's heavy) Dreamland and Balangan.
TAKE YOU BOARDS!!! Bali is probably the cheapest surf destinations for hotels, restaurants (excellent food there BTW), cab rides and knock off shopping but not for anything surfing. It's 3x expensive to rent a board there than here in Mission Beach. Even wax is $2.00 there and $20.00 to put a bandaid on a ding.
