Hey, I have just booked my Indo surf trip, I am going to Lombok and Lembongan as the boat trip seems a bit daunting for my first Indo surf trip. Can anyone give me any travel advice e.g where to surf on the islands, what the medical is like? Anything to be aware of? What size boards to take? I am travelling with a male friend, I am female. We have both been surfing for 15yrs.
We will be staying at Kuta Novotel in Lombok and Playgrounds Resort in Lembongan end of June.
Any kind of feedback would be greatly appreciated. :D

Aah no! The best way to see decent Indo surf is on a boat! You can pretty much choose whatever type of wave you want!

Around Indonesia the medical is crap! Its a pretty dirty place in general, but it sounds like you're going to some nice hotels which would be good.

Surfing on the island - rent a motorbike or car and just drive. Get a decent map, speak to a few locals and drive! As for board - because its the end of June there will be some decent sized swell coming in fairly consistently, so everything from 6'0 - 6'10. More the merrier! You're guaranteed to break at least 1 board each during the trip, but expect a lot more!

It's going to be an awesome trip, when is Indo not awesome?!?

Good luck

I did a boat trip from Bali to Lombok and Lembongan. Definetly worth trying to get desert point good in Lombok, tad fickle but produces the most mechanical lefts I've ever surfed.

Lembongan has different setups, my recommendation is to take your own medipack and cover up with rash vets, booties where possible to avoid reef scratches which can turn nasty if not disinfected and cleaned.

Otherwise have a blast and watch for the endless boat trips carrying 12-20surfers per boat. Instant crowd. ;)

Personal recommendation would be to get the book "surfing indonessia" cant remember whom wrote it but its basically the bible of surfing indonessia including all the spots you are going to. Provides details to best times of the year (tradewinds) which reefs work best on what tides etc. There are various editions out there, I lived off it for 3 months when I was in indo. ;)

In lombok, if you aren't on a boat, everything is based around Kuta. I stayed there for about a month last summer. The surf in Lombok can be awesome, but the crowds in the summer SUCK and it's made worse by the fact that almost every break in Lombok is a reef or point with fairly predictable takeoff. Another downside is that a lot of spots require a 5$ boat ride to access (Ask for Ali for Gerupuk and tell him Dr. Candy sent you  - he's my favorite driver). That said, Lombok is awesome and has some amazing surf.

Anyhow, as for a surf guide, I HIGHLY reccommend the Wavefinder Indo pocket book. A lot of people were salivating over it when I was there:D

Also staying in Lombok at Novotel early to mid June before heading up North. Will post you some info when I've checked it out. Kimen surf shop which is on the web might be quite handy for info.
