How to pack a board for travel?

Can anybody give some tips for how to pack a board for air travel? How do you do it to keep your board ding-free?

Does anyone have experience with protecting their boards with foam pipe insulation and shrink wrap?

What kind of board bag do you recommend? What about a sock or bubble wrap bag?

Do you take off the old wax before you wrap it?

I think if you search the site you will find at least one post on how people pack their boards.

here is a quick outline of how i do it:

wrap with bubble wrap.
wrap tail and nose with lots more bubble wrap.
wrap rails, tail and nose with heavy corrugated cardboard.
wrap with bubble wrap again.
put into a padded board bag that is generally 6" longer than the board (to fit all the wrapping).
have fun travelling.

I have never spent for this but it works.

I have taped towels all over rails. Plus I put extra clothes/ wetsuit for extra packing.

Boards have all done well except my 2 trips to hawaii.....bastards hate surf travelers....I watched them dropping boards on noses and tails one after another while loading plane...bastards.

It is a Hawaii thing....both trips they arrived fine. It was when the hawaiians loaded it for return that I received a nose job.

All my trips to central america no problem....they like tourists....unlike hawaii.

The last time I went to HI I rented.....by the time you pay board fare and repair time, u come out way ahead by renting. Plus if you need to run over some mok it is a rental.

Just make sure you get the $5 surfboard rental insurance. If someone breaks the board over your head for being a howlie you don't have to pay to replace the board.

if you ever come down to Peru you can buy pretty good boards for about $100 and sell them again before you leave, if you stay with us i can even lend you one! no need to spend ridiculous amounts of money on airlines xtra charges....

perusurf makes a good point. It's possible to rent boards many places you go. Save the ridiculous transport fee. That said, I do have one of those hard plastic flight cases like parrysurf provided a link for. I also have some heavily padded light travel bags and canvas socks. This provides different options for different travels.

I read on another post that one guy just travels with his boardbag and puts all his clothing inside it, so at the time he checks in the flight he says he only has one piece of luggage and doesn't pay extra.....
i don't know how reliable this info is, but it sounds possible...

Nah, most airlines are now charging surfboards as oversized luggage. So even if you only have that one bag they are still going to screw you on it for being too big. Starts at $100 and goes up from there....
